Wayne Williams Obituary

Wayne Williams, M.D., passed away Friday, July 18, 2008, at home in Fort Worth after fighting a 10-year battle with prostate cancer.
Service: 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens. Private inurnment.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, please send donations in memory of Wayne Williams, M.D., to the American Cancer Society, Prostate Cancer Research.
Born Feb. 22, 1947, in Greeley, Colo., to Martin and Opal Williams, he was raised on a farm at the foothills of the Colorado Rocky Mountains where he learned the values of hard work, integrity, and the importance of every individual's contribution.
Dr. Williams attended a three-room country school east of Greeley for his elementary years. He was in student government and a scholar athlete in high school and lettered in football at Colorado State University. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals but instead chose a degree in medicine which he received in 1975 from University of Colorado.
After a family practice residency where he was chief resident at Baylor University in Houston, Wayne moved to Eldorado to raise his family in a rural environment where he could teach them the rewards of hard work, skills like welding and cattle management, flying, bulldozing, easy laughter and a can-do spirit on their ranch. He built miles of fence, barns, and an airplane with Mat and Alexis, and enjoyed looking at all the projects and remembering their times.
Over the next 20 years he opened, managed and sold urgent and family care, and worker's compensation clinics in San Antonio and San Angelo. His first clinic, The San Pedro Minor Emergency Clinic, was part of the landmark case by the U.S. Supreme Court allowing hospitals to have clinic networks. He served as Home Health Medical Director, Director of Tom Green County Indigent Health Care, Medical Director for the Certified Detox Program, and actively practiced medicine in emergency rooms and clinic settings.
Dr. Williams always said the best years of his professional life were here in Fort Worth. As chairman of the Department of Community Medicine, he worked with what he strongly felt were the best physicians he had ever known. Through their competence, patient care advocacy, and ability to work as a team, the physician group nurtured and allowed him to enjoy life on a whole new level. The family firmly believes he outlived the original prognosis by years because his peers and support
staff were so wonderfully committed to something bigger than themselves-superior care for the medical needs of the people of Tarrant County. He was also enriched by and enjoyed life with new and lifelong friends, special golfing and fishing buddies. Wayne loved his life and was very grateful for all of it!
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Opal Williams.
Survivors: His wife of 39 years, Lynn; his children, Mathew of Boston, Mass., and Alexis of Chicago, Ill.; his sisters, Elva Alma of Sydney, Australia, Ann Black of Ellensburg, Wash., and Carol Bailey of Fort Worth. Wayne leaves behind a vast number of relatives and friends.

Mrs. Williams and family, I was so saddened to hear about Dr. Williams. I worked with him at the Crane Memorial Hospital when he covered our ER. He was such a joy to work with. I am the Radiology director and I didn't mind being on call when he was here. He was so caring toward the employees and their needs. I knew if I was called in the middle of the night for him I had better get there quickly because it was a true emergency. If we had patients to come in during the night that needed xrays but could wait, he would have them to come back the next day because he didn't want to have to wake me for something that could wait. He was so full of life and I loved hearing his stories of growing up in Colorado. He was very proud of his children and their accomplishments. I am truly, truly sorry for your loss. He will be missed greatly!

Mrs. Williams, We would like to extend out deepest sympathy to you and your family on the loss of Dr. Williams. Even though he hasn't been in Eldorado for some time, he is still missed. He was a great doctor and always treated his patients as friends. I have yet to find a doctor that compares. Take care and God bless you and your family.

DR.WAYNE WILLIAMS WAS ONE OF THE FINEST MEN I HAVE EVER KNOWN. HE WAS A JOY TO WORK WITH, ALWAYS HAD A SMILE ON HIS FACE AND A TWINKLE IN HIS EYE AND A RED BANDANA HANGING OUT OF HIS BACK POCKET. HE WAS A VERY BRAVE MAN TO HANDLE HIS ILLNESS THE WAY HE DID. YOU NEVER SAW HIM WHEN HE LOOKED DOWN. I'M GLAD HE LIVED LONG ENOUGH TO SEE HIS DREAM.
RIP IN PEACE MY FRIEND.

I am so sorry about Dr. Williams' passing. He worked very hard to help those who were JPS patients. I always knew he was on the side of the angels.

There aren't enough dedicated healthcare professionals and very few are willing, as Dr. Williams was, to go out on a limb when it was needed.

I knew there would be changes for the better when Commissioner J.D. Johnson appointed him to the JPS Board of Managers this spring.

I consider Wayne a dear friend. He always had a smile and a kind word. I worked with him for 18 months at the Arlington Sanford Clinic, and Wayne made my job a joy just by his fun attitude and jovial spirit.
I also remember some really good times when Wayne, Lynn, and I would walk our dogs to Hoffbrau restaurant on University Dr, and sit outside and eat, talk, and laugh. Those are some great times I will treasure in my heart always. I will miss him.

I count it a great pleasure to have known and worked with Dr. Wayne Williams. Dr. Williams always had a smile and a chuckle to brighten the Credentialing Office at JPS Health Network each time he entered in. He will be missed greatly.

Wayne was such a special person. He was an incredible support to me when I was discouraged, and I always felt tremendous comfort knowing that I could lean on him. So many of the community medicine physicians at JPS appreciated his strong leadership, and his commitment to patient care. We always knew that Wayne would be fair and do whatever he could to support us in a tough work environment. He was a wonderful friend and mentor. I loved him very much, and will miss him terribly. He added a lot of joy to my life, and I will never forget him.
