Charles Conklin Obituary

Conklin Charles D. Conklin, age 82, of Sunbury, died Tuesday night, November 10, 2015 at the Kobacher House in Columbus. On a stormy winter night on January 21, 1933 in a barn in Delaware County Charles was born to the late Henry H. and Fannie Ruth (Wright) Conklin. A lifelong Sunbury resident, Charles was a graduate of Big Walnut High school and a member of the First Baptist Church of Sunbury. Charles was a veteran of the United States Airforce, serving during the Korean War. He was on the list scheduled for deployment for combat, but his superior officer kept him home due to his knowledge as an electrical airplane mechanic. After his discharge he worked for a short period of time for Carter Lumber. A group of his fellow peers asked him to go along to The Ohio Bell Telephone Company and apply for employment. Funny thinghe was the only one of the group to land a job. Through 39 years of employment he only missed one day. On February 4, 1962 he married Helen "Susie" Clark at the First Baptist Church of Sunbury. They raised three children together and enjoyed yearly two week vacations to Willisville, Ontario, Canada. They initially stayed at the family cabin, but more recently were staying at a friend's place. Charles never missed an episode of The Price is Right from his recliner in the living room. He also enjoyed Jerry Springer and reading his paper. He will be remembered as a sweet, humorous man with a stubborn streak; very set in his ways. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Susie; their three children, David Conklin, Linda Sue Conklin, and Brenda Brush, all of Sunbury; three grandchildren, Nicole Kinslow, Michael Nash, and Jessica Conklin; nieces, Helen Riffle and Beth Ann Williams; and nephews, Art McKay, Bill Riffle, and Jeff Rutherford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Mary, Della, and Lucile and a half-brother Troy Williams. Friends may call on the family on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 from 5-7 p.m. at the DeVORE-SNYDER FUNERAL HOME, 637 North State Route 61, Sunbury, Ohio 43074. Funeral service will be held there on Thursday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dan Brown officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Sunbury Memorial Park. Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to First Baptist Church of Sunbury, P.O. Box 394, Sunbury, Ohio 43074. The DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home of Sunbury is honored to serve the family of Mr. Conklin. Condolences and special memories can be shared with them at snyderfuneralhomes.com
