Christy Charles "Chris" Hayes

Christy Hayes Obituary

HAYES Christy "Chris" Charles Hayes, 63, of Orient, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at Grant Hospital following a sudden illness. He was born January 24, 1942 in Columbus, the only child of Christy S. and Vivian O. Hayes. Chris was truly an inspiration to each individual he met. A devout family man, he considered his family to be his greatest accomplishment. His loyalty, unwavering stability and true devotion to each endeavor was always an example for others. Chris retired from the Columbus Department of Police after 33 years of dedicated service. He proudly oversaw PAL, and he educated others in the soundness of body and mind and the importance of physical fitness. For the last 10 years of his career, Chris served with the Marine Police at Griggs Reservoir. Chris took pride in treating all people equally. He had great compassion for the common man. This compassion shined thru his work at the Alvis Halfway House where he was lovingly called "Block Cop". His love of physical fitness was evident in many of his hobbies which included wrestling, water skiing, competitive speed boat racing and skeet and trap shooting. His strong competitiveness was what drove him throughout his life. Chris is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 40 years, Sandra S. Hayes; beloved children, Kristen (Jeffrey) Benson of Bexley, Audra Hayes of Galloway and Christian (Gail) Hayes of Worthington; precious grandchildren, Kyle, Ava and Blake; special cousins, Richard Hayes, David Hayes, Tom Hudson, Peggy Shafar and Tom and Marge Littleton; dear family friend, Sue Swisher and countless friends. Calling hours 11 a.m.–2 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the SCHOEDINGER NORRIS CHAPEL, 3920 Broadway, Grove City, where his funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, September 9, 2005 with Pastor Tom Hudson officiating. Burial will follow at Green Lawn Cemetery. FOP service 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Chris's memory to the Alvis House, P. O. I graduated from the Columbus Police Academy with Christy and then worked with him from the 10th, 15th precinct on the west side. He was a wonderful man and a great human being. Everybody respected and loved Christy for his quick wit and friendly demeanor. Rest in well-deserved peace, my friend.

I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of Chris. I just heard about it today. I remember the one time he and I talked non-stop for over an hour about old cars that we each had and ones we loved.

It was a common interest for us and I enjoyed the conversation and his company. I know he will be missed. My prayers and with all of you.

To the Hayes family. Just thought I'd share a quick story. Years ago Chris and a friend stopped by to see how I was doing after my house had been broken into. I had just made a plate of chocolate chip cookies, a quadruple batch, and of course set the rather large turkey platter on which they were cooling on the sofa table and offered them to Chris and Ron. Chris ate EVERY cookie I had made! I guess it took a lot of fuel for those huge biceps! Thank God for people like your husband and father. Too bad there aren't more like him around. Sincerely, Mrs. Vicki Malone

My wife and I are deeply saddened by the passing of this fine gentleman and excellent officer. I will always remember Chris' distinctive on-air presence, his voice on the police radio was always calm, polite and with a touch of dry subtle humor. He was one of the very special officers.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of your loss. The obituary that your family wrote was a wonderful tribute to the type of person your father was. He truly was an inspiration to many; I know he was to me. I was very proud to have known him for over 20 years. He was a man of great character, inner strength and integrity, and he will be missed by so many.

I will always remember him with a smile, as I recall all of the wonderful stories he shared with us over the years.

Dear Sandi..I do not know what to say ....my heart goes out to you....life is so short and one never knows when God will call us home. What a difference a day or a moment makes in our lives. Chris was no stranger to that as you know, with all his past brushes with death. God is a God of love, Grace and Mercy. He loves each one of us unconditionally. This world is full of pain, suffering, sorrow, death and evil in all kinds of form. I pray right now that he is in Heaven with his friends and family that went before him and they are rejoicing with him before the Lord. That thought still leaves us here on earth without him and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Chris touched a lot of lives and all of us are better people because of Chris's love for life and positive attitude and determination. He never met a stranger...what a great gift! I only wish I had the seen him before he left this world as it has been several years since I talked with him.

Sandi...our prayers will be for you and your family as you go through this time. I pray that even in death that Chris will touch lives through you and your family and all that he did for people. We all need Jesus and time is short!!!!!

Dear Sandra:

I'm still in shock and very deeply saddened of the loss of Chris. I keep thinking of the day I taught him to barefoot ski. He wouldn't give up until he accomplished it. Chris made a comfortable place in the boat for my wife and new born son and said, "Now, lets get down to business". I have great memories of us working together in the police department. There was aways laughter when he was around. Thank God for the great memories I have to keep him with me throughout my life. Our prayers are with you and your family.
