My apologies for the belated response to Dave's passing. I've lived in Florida for 21 years, haven't seen or spoken with Dave since the 1960's, and just heard of his death a few days ago. First and most importantly, my sincere condolences to Dave's family. Here 's my back- story . . .
I met Dave in the early 60's (summer of 1962, if memory serves). I was in college, a WHS grad ('61), and from seventh grade on was focused on becoming a teacher and football coach. Ralph Sabock, my high school football coach, hired me for summer pre-season practice to serve as an assistant coach with the freshman team. Dave Dayton was the head freshman coach. Working with him was a terrific experience; but not as much from a football perspective as from that of an adult relating to and teaching young adolescents (coaching is indeed a form of teaching), some of whom had likley not yet grasped the difference between being on a football team and being a football player. I learned from Dave that young teenage boys have a lot on their plate, factors that affected us all at one time or another, but which many of us fail to consider in younger people as we mature: figuring out and dealing with the myriad of changes inherent in adolescence (physical, emotional, hormonal); increased academic demands; tension of relatonships, such as with parents; the alure of the oposite gender and so forth. At one time or another, I witnessed his experience with and insight into these young people brought to the fore in his coaching. And don't get the impression Dave was a mild-mannered push-over. His military experience came through loud and clear in the discipline demanded of the team. (By the way, that freshman football team was undefeated!)
Following college graduation in 1967, I taught a year-and-a-half at WHS, serving as head freshman football coach. I'm not sure, but I don't think Dave was coaching at that point. Regardless, I was a rookie history teacher and I continued to benefit from Dave's engagement, care and concern for his students, and friendship.
For the 1968-69 school year, I changed employment, moving to another school system. From that point on, I cannot honestly say whether I ever saw or spoke again with Dave. I hope so, but regardless, I will always value the short period in my professional life during which I knew and benefitted from my time with him.
As an end note, there would be a great void if I failed to mention Dave's humor. The man had a palpable wit, a good laugh, and it was simply enjoyable and fun to be in his presence.

Mr. Dayton was one of the best teachers I had at Worthington High School. But other students did not always appreciate his enthusiasm for U.S. history. If someone fell asleep in his class, he had an uncanny ability to continue talking as if nothing was wrong, pick up the metal trash can at the front of the room, walk down the row to the desk of the sleeping student, hold the trash can up in the air and then drop it on the floor next to the sleeping student while the rest of the class watched to see the startled victim jump. That was 50 years ago and I remember it clearly to this day. My deepest sympathy to his family. David Dayton was a great man!

Our family was very close to David for a period of time when I was in high school. We send sympathy and prayers to his wife and family, and will remember how much he loved poetry, and will always have fond memories of him. May all of the memories his family has of him bring comfort to them in this sad time. May he rest in peace.

Mr. Dayton was a teacher at Worthington High School 1969 I believe was the year...I can see him as plain as day leaning up against his desk telling all of us...as if one of us at a time....He would teach us this routinely...."If all you can remember about my class is what A Tariff is. It is a Tax on Imported goods." period. He was gentle and kind. I am so happy that he lived a good long life !!!! I know everyone who knew him is grieving....RIP dear Mr. Dayton With Love, Lolli Bagby Hamrick
