Deborah Darnell Obituary

DARNELL Deborah Sue (Stonerock) Darnell, 60, of Dublin, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on August 18, 2011. She is survived by her beloved husband of 22 years, Richard "Dale" Darnell; aunts, Linda (Don) Harden and Mary Ellen Reid Radcliff of Circleville, Ohio; endearing daughter, Beth Darnell; numerous cousins; and many special friends. Debbie was preceded in death by her grandparents Albert C. and Nina B. Reid, mother Loretta "Jane" Stonerock, aunts Gloria Watkins and Biddy Moorehead, also of Circleville, as well as her cocker spaniels Duffy and Darby. Debbie, a graduate of Circleville High School, was the only child of Jane Stonerock, Debbie's consummate role model. She instilled in Debbie the highest standards and humanitarian values that became her way of life. Debbie will be laid to rest next to her mother, Jane, in Circleville, Ohio. Debbie enjoyed her successful career with The Limited Stores for 19 years where she worked with contemporaries who helped to shape her life, and remained true and lifelong friends. Debbie was always passionate about helping her four-legged friends, the dogs. She maintained an active involvement with the Columbus Dog Connection. She served tirelessly as a board member, inspired others, and provided creative energy to this organization in which she so strongly believed. Debbie volunteered at the Stoneridge Medical Center location of The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute for five years. She emphathized with and encouraged those who received chemotherapy and added brightness to their day. An avid sports fan in general, Debbie had an insatiable appetite for OSU football. Her loyalty to the Buckeyes was unwavering and her enthusiasm boundless. She cherished her eclectic and exotic travels with Dale, experiencing the beauty and splendor of cities both far and near. Debbie always had her camera ready to capture the memories of every event and gathering and shared them enthusiastically with family and friends. She possessed a unique ability to make friends, nurture them, maintain them and share them. She truly led the "Cosmopolitan" life. Always the lady, she inspired others in limitless ways and led by example. Admired for her courage, determination and her constant smile, Debbie led her life with grace, dignity and generosity, for which she will always be remembered. Debbie wanted everyone to know that because of the love from Dale, her family and friends, she gained enormous strength to deal with this disease and lived a joyful life, never letting cancer stand in her way since her 1987 diagnosis. A special thank you from the Darnells to Debbie's Doctors, Charles Shapiro, Theodore Teknos, Michael Caligiuri and David Schuller at The James Cancer Hospital and also to Dr. R. Randall Ogg, her periodontist, as well as each caring person on her medical teams. Also a special thank you to HomeReach Hospice, Ohio Health, for their kindness, gentle care, and guidance. Debbie's life will be celebrated at The Westin Columbus (formerly The Great Southern Hotel), 310 South High Street, Columbus, OH 43215 on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Debbie Darnell to The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, 660 Ackerman Road, P.O. Box 183112, Columbus, OH 43218-3112. All donations will go to Dr. Shapiro and his research team per Debbie's request. DEFENBAUGH-WISE-SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL HOME, CIRCLEVILLE, is honored to serve the Darnell family. Dale, we are so very sorry for your loss. We only knew Debbie the past few years, as neighbors of the Van Brimmers. But it was clear from the beautiful light that was Debbie that her spirit was very bright. She embodied grace under fire. We were lucky to have known her, and our deepest condolences to you and your family.

I worked at the Limited with Debbie and the first thing I think of when I hear her name is big bright sunshine. She always positive, smiling and kind. I do remember a funny story I want to share with you. It was when Cabbage Patch dolls came onto the scene and Mark, MIke and Lee, "kidnapped" her little girl. They sent a polaroid of her bound and gagged asking for a ransom. I went to Debbie and told her I knew how to fix them. We got them the chocolate they wanted then I proceeded to poke holes in the bottom of the chocolates, to make it look like they had been tampered with.It is amazing what the power of suggestion can do to a guilty mind!! The boys thought we really DID add something to them. I don't remember ever telling them anything differently!!

Debbie you will be missed. God Bless your family and friends and thank you for being you!

Debbie!
Was who/what we all should strive to be. Gracious in life and in her fight with her cancer. Always with a smile and a hug. Her mom kept me up with her until she passed in 2000 and then her Aunt Mary Ellen would fill me in on her happy life with a wonderful, loving hubby. She was blessed to have a happy, full life while she was on this earth, although cut short. She lived a full, giving life. She will be in our hearts forever. Loved & Missed more than she would ever have dreamed that she touched so many lifes. Starting back in high school...Dale you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers...Patty

Dear Dale and family,
It seems Debbie has been an influence in my life for almost 20 years...first meeting her at a mutual friend's home in Dublin and then journeying with her through her cancer and my subsequent two. She was so strong despite her tears and fears. She touched so many lives. I imagine more than she might have realized and in more ways than I can list. Her strength, courage and determination through this journey has been an inspiration to so many people, especially me. Debbie...you are a Champion and our hero. Your passion for life was contagious just like that beautiful, vibrant smile of yours. You mastered the art of living in the precious present and you have created many treasured memories for your friends and your family. We will keep the faith and the fight for a cure going...It has been obvious you have loved unconditionally and you are loved immensely in return. Actually one word best describes you: love. We know the Lord has welcomed you home in His loving arms. May He also bring peace and comfort to you, Dale and your family and wipe away your tears as He enfolds you in His arms. May you feel Debbie's presence and love with you still. May comfort and healing shine down on you and may peace light your path ahead. God bless you.

I remember Debbie with great affection and respect. Although I didn't know her well, every time we'd see each other she was upbeat, positive and fun to be with. She was loved by many and will be sorely missed.
