I had the pleause of getting to know Derek and your amazing family over the past two years. Derek was such a joy to see each time he came into clinic. No matter what was going on, he always had the biggest smile on his face. I know we all looked forward to seeing Derek whenever he had a visit. It was an honor to know and care for such a wonderful young man and what an impact he had on so many lives, mine included. I will remember his smile forever.

I am sorry to have missed calling hours yesterday evening as I would have liked to express my condolences in person. Derek was such a pleasure at each and every medical visit, sharing that fabulous smile even if you knew he was not feeling all that great. I feel so privileged to say that he was one of my patients and I am deeply sorry for your loss. I can only hope that Derek will be looking out for me and the other patients that I care for, providing guidance. You are an amazing family and your love was evident in all that you did for Derek each and every day.

I met Derek at a 4th of July Celebration a few years ago and he left an impact on me that I will never forget. His wonderful smile was just amazing. The one thing that also stood out to me and touched my heart was the way that his family loved him so much and cared for him. I could feel the love that each of his family members had for him just by sitting and watching as they all took care of him and made over him. I could just see that he was so content and happy with his family all around him and as he watched the sky light up with the fireworks, he was smiling from ear to ear. It was truly a blessing to have met such a wonderful person and such a kind and caring family. I am so sorry for your loss, but I am sure that Derek is smiling down on each of you right now. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. God Bless you.

Our family too mourns the loss of a light so bright as Derek's. During our time with him he taught us so much about true strength and acceptance. Such authentic love and joy is known to few. I'm so sorry I can't be home to show support. Derek was loved by all and he will be missed more than anything. He was an amazing person and the motivation of many others. He might have been younger but I looked up to him for courage and strength. As I'm sure many others have too. He's the strongest person I have the pleasure of calling my friend and brother.
