We are so sorry for your family's loss in losing your Dad and Grandad. We have watched your Dad race many times and have taken my grandson to watch him also and we have enjoyed this so many years. Sorry that we were out of town and missed the funeral.

I had the great opportunity to have Don Townsend as a grandfather. Although he wasnt my biological grandfather he always reached far and beyond to support me and keep me on track in life. As a kid he was grandpa and a hero. And today his impact on my life influences me to strive to be a better man. We will miss him greatly, but his spirit still lives through the fortunate lives he touched. God bless you Grandpa

I first met Don at CMS around 1961. He always had a smile and was so willing help us or answer any question we had. We are so sorry to hear about his leaving, but he left us doing what he loved to do. To the entire Family, please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.

My God be with you in this time of sorrow. My son Shawn Davis and I are friends of Gary and Stephanie. I didn't know Don only meet him once, but I do know he raised Gary and helped make him the great person that Gary is today. So I know that he must have been very special. Our most heartfelt sympanthies to all of Don's family and friends. Don and I worked together for many years and it was rare a day went by he wasn't smiling. He was always nice to me and my family when they would visit the shop. We'll miss ya Don.

Don was a very important influence throughout my entire childhood and adolescence.
When I returned to Columbus to visit family and friends, Don was one of my first stops at the "shop," as I always considered him to be both.
He was one the kindest men that I have known, and I am a better man today for having known him.

What a shock to learn Don had passed. Don and I owned a late model in the early days of his career. Don was a solid human being
and had a huge talent for the sport.

Very sad to hear about Don. I met him at Columbus Motorspeedway 4 years ago, when I went to watch the Sprint cars. Later got to talk to him many times when I was assistant tech inspector on the sprint cars. My wife, Rebecca, was aquainted with him from years ago, when he was good friends with her brother, Jim Goodwin. Don was a special person, and will be misssed by many.Don gave us all many a thrill, watching him race.

I knew Don for 30 years helped build cars for him to race and helped prep them as well. The years as "bobby bell " and the USAC years. His jokes with the bentenhousen's and his love for racing will be with me forever, 30 years is a long time to know and share with someone like Don I'll miss ya bud and my heart felt condolances to his family and friends David Warren :-(

To All Mr. Townsends family and friends, I have watched him race since I began going to the races in 1970 and he was one of the best.I Will miss the "spark" he gave to racing in general, no matter where he raced.My heart,love and prayers are with you at this time, but know that he won the final race and he is with Jesus. Cherish his life and enjoy the times he brought to you. I am so sorry this happened and that you have to go through this but try so hard to focus on the good and it will help you.

Although we did not know Don personally, we all had great respect for him and his racing talent. Even though we raced in seperate divisions at MMS, Don was always there to talk and lend a helping hand. Most recently on July 2, he shared some of his time with our children who really were touched by his kindness and compassion. We will forever miss you.....God Speed.

We had only recently met Don Sr. personally and by the energy he released one could tell he was a great man. When we did meet Don Sr. it was obvious where Don Jr. gets his passion for the race life. Our hearts are sad and our prayers are with you Donny Jr, Andrea and Family. Your father was one of the good guys, he never met a stranger and always made you feel good. A week before his accident he was sitting in the stands with us watching you race. He had a picture of his car and he autographed it for us. I know I will treasure that picture forever.

I first met Don when he raced as Bobby Bell in Sandusky and Lorraine. My dad was actually one of his tire changers back then as well as body and paint schemes on the car. I remember Don and all his wisdom when we would set around the car even away from the track. He was a very high spirited man full of pride. He would tell me often, be 200% sure before you do anything drastic in your life; that way you have room for mistakes and still be right on track. Watching him, Todd Gibson, Tim Richmond, and the others changed me from a drag race fan to an Oval Track Fan. I was thrilled when Don came back to the racing world, and as Don Townsend. With a new look of enthusiasm and pride, as many things had changed in his life, Don was still the expert racer and man. We race fans will miss watching him, his zeal for a good race, but that will never compare to how much he will be missed as a husband, father, or grandfather. May the Lord bless you through these troubling times ahead.

I meet Don at Sandusky Speedway many years ago and just ran into him a couple of years ago again. When my husband and I got involved on a USAC racing team. If you are a track owner, Don Townsend Sr., was the type of competitor and man, you would want racing at your track. If you are a competitor, he was the type of driver and man, you would want next to you in the pits, and running wheel to wheel with you on the track.
We lost a fine member of our racing community.
As many men his age retire to the stands, Don was able to continue to enjoy his passion in life. We should all be so fortunate.
Racers everywhere now have a new angel to watch over them and to help guide them.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Don's family and friends during this sorrowful time. I never got to meet Don, but I believe I was his #1 fan. I watched him race in Columbus when I was a kid. Then he came up to Mansfield it was just great. I never missed a race. It will never be the same at MMS without Don. Once again I'm so sorry for the loss of this great man.
