Donald Cullen Obituary

Cullen, Donald
Donald L. Cullen, 76, of Columbus, Ohio passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2017. Donald—kind, generous and warm-hearted to all he knew—was born on December 28, 1940 in Short Creek, Ohio to the late Grace Virginia (Huffman) and James Cullen. Donald grew up in Harrisville, Ohio and attended Adena High School. After high school, he joined the Navy, and served his country from 1958 until 1963. After the military, he studied engineering physics at the Ohio State University, where he also obtained his MBA. Donald was a visionary and prolific inventor, whose ideas were often decades before their time—including pioneering work with lasers and holograms, and solutions with renewable energy and waste management. Survived by his wife, Song; his daughters, Michelle Cullen and Chris (Mark) Jonard; his three grandchildren, Gaibel, Gowan and Gwen Jonard; his two step daughters, Kaucha (Joe) Santry and Deja Franklin; his two step-grandchildren, Rowyn and Soairse; his siblings, Linda Luke, Susan Williams, Mary (Art) Ryan, Kathryn (Robert) Kidd, Shirley (Karl) Bowers, Deborah (Michael) Beal; Robert (Joan) Cullen; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Janice Muschott, Jeannie Wickham, Nancy Cullen and brothers-in-law Kenneth Muschott, Bernie Kager, Charlie Wickham, Gordon Williams and George Luke. Visitation is from 12-1pm on Saturday, November 25 at the Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home, 515 High St., Worthington, Ohio, 43085. The service will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Harrisville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 173, Harrisville, Ohio, 43974. Condolences to www.rutherfordfuneralhome.com.

Don Cullen and George Foster hired me right out of Ohio State with an electrical engineering degree with the ink still wet. Autech was a great experience for me and Don was a great president. Many years later I sent him a business plan to see what he thought about it and he ended up hiring me to work again on using holograms and diffraction gratings to make displays. We stayed close until he passed in to the Spiritual World. One thing that he has was enthusiasm for technology that was always inspiring. I still miss him dearly.

The day after Thanksgiving 1977, I had an idea for a bathroom scale with a memory. I called Don, one of my life insurance clients. When I told him my idea he said, "Yes, I can make that". When you got your Shell oil bill, there would be papers with information about items you could order. We thought that would be the way for us to start selling our eventual scale which would remember your weight and plot a graph showing how you were doing toward reaching your weight goal. It also would show your biorhythms for the day. We had one meeting with potential investors. We named our company "Scioto Technologies"; I still have the file folder. I got diverted and left Columbus in 1978 to become the Rax Roast Beef franchisee for Arizona. Over the years I would think back fondly of Don and our almost adventure. I never really finalized an invention till 2014 when I designed the CPAP Comfort Cover. Every year around Thanksgiving, I would think of Don. However, years ago I could no longer remember his name until today when his name jumped onto my mind. Like a bolt from the blue, I said, "Don Cullen". I was delighted that I finally remembered his name. I searched for him on the internet and was shocked that today is the one year anniversary of his passing. As strange as it may seem, I miss him. 11.18.18

Yes, I'm truly sadden about Don's passing. I have personally known him for over twenty plus years. He was a great friend and I always enjoyed our talks.

He will be missed and I will never ever forget our business & personal friendship. May the warmness & healing blanket of God be with your family during this time.
