Duncan Campbell Obituary

CAMPBELL Duncan "Butch" Hill Campbell, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, died unexpectedly from respiratory failure during the early morning hours of Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at his home in Winter Haven, Fla. Butch enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. Born in Newark, Oh. on February 15, 1936, Butch spent most of his formative years in Upper Arlington, Oh. and lead the Golden Bears as Captain and Quarterback of the football team. Later, during college at The Ohio State University, he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity as well as the honorary society, SPHINX. In the fall of 2008, Butch celebrated his 50-year alumnus status with the University. Wed to his childhood sweetheart, Jane Pearce, since 1959, Butch and Jane marked their Golden 50th Anniversary this past May, with a family celebration at the Cherry Valley Lodge in Ohio. Upon graduation from OSU in 1958, he began his 33-year career with the Ohio Bell Telephone Company, starting as a Sales Representative in Columbus and rising through the ranks to become General Marketing Manager and Vice President of Sales in Cleveland, Oh. In 1983, he was appointed President of Ohio Bell Communications, the position from which he retired in 1990. He also served as an Officer in the United States Army from 1959-1965. During his service with the Bell System, Butch was also an active member in the communities in which he lived, including the American Red Cross, United Way, Ohio Chamber of Commerce, Masons, Ohio State University Alumni Association and President's Club, Beta Theta Pi Alumni Association, the First Congregational Church of Hudson, the Country Club of Hudson, Lake Region Country Club and First Community Church, where both he and Jane grew up. While wintering in Florida for the past 10 years, they also attended Hope Presbyterian Church in Winter Haven, Fla. Butch was preceded in death by his parents Kathryn and Russell Campbell, sister Sally Adkins, as well as mother-in-law Isabelle "Issy" Pearce. He is survived by his sister, Gloria Logan (Dick); his loving wife, Jane; children, Craig Campbell (Brad Trees), Christopher Campbell (Kathy) and Jennifer Peterson (Chris); along with grandchildren, Duncan and Mackenzie Campbell, and Isabelle, Amelia and Harrison Peterson; and many nieces and nephews. A "Celebration of Life" service will be held at the SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, on Saturday, November 14 at 10 a.m. Rev. Jim Long officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for contributions to be made to First Community Church, 1320 Cambridge Blvd., Columbus, Oh. 43212. JP & family,
I am so, so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. Even at at a time like this, it would be out of character for me to filter what I thought when I read your dad's obituary, so here it goes, "Wow. Jen's dad is a handsome guy!" Not the way I would like to have found out probably goes without saying. The next thought was that I clearly need to work less and participate more. I am in awe of your father's community involvement. What a difference he has made! It makes sense to me even more now why you are the spectacular person you are. You, Chris, your mom, your dad, and all your family are in my prayers.

Peace & love,
donna

Dear Jane and family,
As first cousins, we didn't see much of each other through the years, but every time we went South from Michigan to a reunion in Newark or just for a visit we always ended up at Uncle Russ & Aunt Kathrine's house. Loving arms were a tradition and always part of the Campbell family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all...God Bless us all with Love,
