Edwin Rosenberg Obituary

ROSENBERG Edwin A. Rosenberg, 62, former Senior Institute Economist at The National Regulatory Research Institute, retired Economics Professor, and current Adjunct Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University, passed away suddenly on June 30, 2008 at Lake Tahoe in Meeks Bay, California. He lived in Worthington. Dr. Rosenberg taught graduate courses in public economics in OSU's John Glenn School of Public Affairs, and was a lecturer at Michigan State's National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissions. He was a member of the American Economics Association, presented testimony before numerous regulatory bodies, and was widely published. A native of North Carolina, early in his career Ed taught economics and statistics at North Carolina State University, where he received his doctorate degree, and the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Prior to that, he was an economist at the North Carolina Utilities Commission. He leaves his brother, Dr. Larry Rosenberg, wife, Kathy, their children, Samuel and Ethan Rosenberg, his sister, Ellen Rosenberg Gilreath, her children, Samuel Gilreath, Evan Gilreath and his wife, Ashley, and a great niece and nephew, Austen and Jonathan Gilreath, all of Asheville. He also leaves his best friend and companion, Marlene Beierle, and her children, Jennifer Lucas and Eben Beierle and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins in Atlanta, Alabama, and Florida. He will be missed by his many friends, students whom he lovingly mentored, and colleagues across the country. The Hadassah Hikers will conduct a memorial hike in Ed's honor on Sunday, July 6, at 9 a.m. beginning at the Shelter House at the Park of Roses. Ed's Breakfast Club, Investment Club, and Book Club will also host events in his memory. His friends treasured him as a man of great wisdom that was masked by modesty. He always had time for another cup of coffee with a friend who just wanted to sit and chat for a while. Ed will be buried in his hometown of Ashville, North Carolina on Sunday, July 6, 2008, at 12Noon. Service will be held at GROCE FUNERAL HOME, 72 Long Shoals Rd., Arden, North Carolina 28704 (www.grocefuneralhome.com). In lieu of flowers, his family is asking that donations be sent to the Edwin Rosenberg Memorial Scholarship Fund, John Glenn School of Public Affairs, The Ohio State University, 1810 College Rd., Columbus, OH 43210, attn: Jodi Bopp, Director of Philanthropy. Gifts will go toward benefiting the students via scholarships, books and celebrated speakers. Sign the online guestbook at www.dispatch.com/obituaries

Dr. Rosenberg was a very compassionate, fair and honest man. He was always willing to converse with students and explain difficult concepts. I was one of his M.A. students in 2008. I convey my deepest sympathies and my thoughts and prayers are with your family in this very difficult time.

We just last evening heard of Ed's untimely passing. Ed was our neighbor and many times attended our Holiday Party we host each year. Often times I would see him out running, and he would lift his hand up with a quick wave, Always kind, soft spoken and warm. Please know that our prayers and thoughts are with you all.

I will never forget Dr. Rosenberg, he was an example to all for his compassion, honesty, fairness, and ability to keep a cool, calm mind at all times. I was one of his many Ph.D. students. Please accept my deepest sympathy for his family. I am sad with you over his passing.

Dr. Rosenberg means more than a professor to me. He is a great mentor. He provided me with generous help and valuable guidance during my research assistantship at NRRI as well as my doctoral study. I wouldn't be at where I am if without him. I will always remember his kindness and his knowledge.

Bye bye professor Ed Rosenberg,

Until now I am still shaking with your unexpected passing. We were supposed to work together in my dissertation when you got back from vacation.

I will miss you very much in the rest of my life. You are one of the kindest and most supportive professor I have chance to work with in the Ohio State University.

I was Ed's office mate at NC State while we both struggled to complete our dissertations. He was my best male friend and all-time favorite guy. He even helped me drive to Maine and clean the cottage early in the spring a couple of years ago. I'll miss seeing, calling, and emailng him. Oh, how I'll miss this wonderful, gentle, caring man!

What a great guy, and instructor - he had a real flavor for keeping priorities straight - and that work and school were seldom as important as other aspects. He inspired me and helped me get through the Glenn School program. Couldn't work a power point at all, but God love his effort and perspective!

I did not know Dr. Rosenberg well. I do know kindness when I encounter it, though; and this I found immediately in Dr. Rosenberg. His one rule for our class was that all philosophical and political disagreements be couched in dignity and mutual respect, a respect for the dignity of others. This I will try always to remember.

I'd like to share some of my favorite quotes from Dr. Rosenberg said during his 730 Public Finance class:

"Medicaid is the health insurance provided by Wal-Mart."

"You can have simple taxes. You can have fair taxes. But you can't have both."

I thought both of those were pretty good things to say.

Also, now that you've become one with everything, you must know that I watched about 30 minutes of the Marx Brother's "Animal Crackers" on mute one night in your class while haphazardly taking notes. Sorry.

Rest in peace, Dr. Rosenberg.

Dr. Rosenberg was my Public Finance professor at Ohio State. He brought a great deal of enthusiasm to the class and was successful in making what could be a dull subject interesting. He truly cared about his students and I was very sad to hear about his passing. I hope that his family and friends can find strength in their wonderful memories. God Bless!

I knew Ed through his work at NRRI and spent some time with him at industry meetings. He impressed me as a consummate gentleman and he was always willing to offer his help and expertise whenever regulatory assistance was needed. My sympathies are extended to all his family and friends.

I treasured Ed as a friend, mentor, and bridge player. He was generous, kind, and funny and one of the most non-judgmental people I ever met. He was also a wonderful statistics tutor who helped me get through OSU grad school. I will miss him.

Professor Rosenberg was my favorite instructor of all time. He always had time to meet with me outside of class. I learned a tremendous amount from him and am very saddened that I won't be able to see him again. He was the best!

We had the pleasure of meeting Ed through our daughter and son-in-law, Jamie and Eben Beierle. We immediately saw he was kind and thoughtful. We always enjoyed his and Marlene's company.
We extend our sympathy to all of Ed's family and friends.
May memories carry you through this sorrowful time.
