George Cotter Obituary

COTTER George Robert Cotter died Wednesday, April 14, 2010. Many friends and acquaintances knew him as George, but to his family and childhood friends, he was Bob. Bob was born October 12, 1933 to James L. and Inez Sheskey Cotter in Glouster, Ohio. He graduated from Glouster High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army and had a tour of duty in Okinawa. After his service in the army, he enrolled at Ohio University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He did his student teaching at The Plains High School. After graduation, he taught industrial arts and driver's education at Albany High School which later became Alexander. When it was decided to start a football program at the school, Bob was their first football coach. He had many fond memories of that period of his life. In 1968, he was appointed postmaster at the post office in Glouster where he retired after 29 1/2 years of service. Bob loved living in Glouster and except for the time he was in the army, he was able to live in what he called "The Peaceful Valley" the rest of his life. Bob enjoyed playing golf and taking fishing trips with his friends, especially the fishing trips to Canada and the fall trips to Michigan to fish for salmon. He was an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Bob was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, one of the original board members of the Trimble Local Textbook and Supplies Foundation, and volunteered at the Bishopville church of Christ food pantry. He was preceded in death by his parents, a baby sister Nancy Ann, and a brother-in-law Arthur Moore. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Ginnan Cotter, whom he married June 14, 1969 at Holy Cross. Other survivors are sister, Charlotte (Paul) Rea of Columbus; sister, Jody Moore of Glouster; brother, James J. Cotter (Marjorie) of Kettering; several nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Diana Ginnan of Columbus. Arrangements are by MORRISON FUNERAL CHAPEL, Bishopville, Ohio, where visiting hours will be Sunday April 18 from 2:30-5:30 p.m. A wake service will be held at 2:30. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Holy Cross in Glouster at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 19. Burial will be in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Trimble, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, friends, if they wish may make a donation in Bob's memory to The Trimble Local Textbook and Supplies Foundation, c/o Sandy Gyure, P.O. Box 187, Glouster, Ohio 45732 or to HomeReach Hospice, 3595 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, Ohio 43214-4034.
