Although I did not know James as we were in different squadrons in the 91st, we both were founding members of the 91st SRWA. We wore the same uniform and served our Air Force and country together. May he now soar thru clouds on high and reach out and touch the face of God.

Our condolences to the family of our dear Jim Franz, who I was proud to serve with in the 91st Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Lockbourne AFB, OH. The 91st was the elite unit of the USAF, when SAC was still new, first to fly Boeing six-jet RB-47s. RB-47Es of Jim's 324th Squadron were the first to fly over the USSR to bring back photographs and intelligence. The first of these missions was on May 8, 1954 out of RAF Fairford. The RB-47Es of the 91st flew thousands of missions until they were replaced by SAC's U-2s in late 1957. For most of his life secrecy prevented Jim from telling about his Cold War assignment. Jim was extra special, that is why he was selected to be in charge of an RB-47E in the 91st. We will greatly miss Jim at our 91st SRW Reunion on Sept 5th in Minot, ND, where the 91st became a pioneer Strategic Missile Wing. At the banquet, we will have a special toast for our Gone West Friend Jim Franz We will keep all of you in our hearts and prayers during this time of sorrow. For all of the 91st Strategic Reconnaissance Wing Association, God Bless America, Frank

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

For Jim's Family,
I want you to keep this thought - Jim was a patriot of these United States. Even after his active duty in the US Air Force, Jim continued to serve by active association with the 91st SRW Association. He was rightfully proud of his service, and we were honored to have served with him.
Jim will be missed by his many comrades-in-arms of the 91st Strategic Reconnaissance Wing.
Patriotism-Pride-Brotherhood
A motto Jim respected and lived by.
