James Herman Obituary

Herman Dr. James E. "Doc" Herman was born April 24, 1933 in Dayton, the son of Ralph D. and Emma (Bogan) Herman, and was called home by the Lord on March 14, 2014. Jim fought a long, hard battle over the past couple of years and God finally decided he was ready for a great veterinarian. Jim graduated from London High School, where he was inducted in the Academic Hall of Fame in 1994, and The Ohio State University College of Veterinarian Medicine. While attending OSU he was a trainer for the football and wrestling teams and worked directly for Woody Hayes for 7 years. Jim practiced veterinary medicine for over 40 years in Madison County. He was so well known that an Ohio Magazine once wrote an article penned: "Country Vet" detailing some of his experiences. Jim was also an Adjunct Professor at OSU and severed on the Veterinary College Entrance Board for over 20 years. He loved to mentor new veterinarians to enjoy the profession he loved so much. Jim also was the Treasurer, President and named outstanding Veterinarian for the Ohio Veterinarian Medical Association. Once Jim retired from his animal practice he became the Madison County Health Commissioner. A position that agreed to take for a brief period. He liked it so much, that brief period turned into 13 years of service. Jim was also involved in many civic organizations including: JC's (past president and outstanding JC), Lions Club (past president), president of Kirkwood Cemetery Association, and a Madison County Fair Judge to name a few. He also was a master Mason and achieved the Scottish Rite. Jim was also a 50+ year member of the First Presbyterian church where he served as an Elder and Deacon. In addition to his love for the Ohio State Buckeyes, his number #1 passion was golf. Jim was a member of the London Country Club for over 50 years, serving as president on two different occasions. He was quite the accomplished golfer winning the club championship 4 different years. He also has the distinction of being the oldest club champion when he won at age 73. Jim was married to the love of his life, Mary Anne, for over 57 years. He was preceded in death by his loving daughter Debbie in 2003 and his brother Robert. Jim is survived by Mary Anne; son, Don (Jane) Herman; son-in-law, Tony Brake; grandchildren, Rachel and Drew Herman, Kevin and Kenton Brake. Jim was quite a character, whether it was watching an OSU game, playing golf or a simple game of cards, he was the ultimate competitor and that is how he will be remembered. Family will welcome friends Tuesday, March 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in London, 211 Garfield Avenue, London, where Jim's funeral service will be held, Wednesday, March 19 at 11 a.m. He will lie in state for one prior to the start of the service. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to the James E. Herman Scholarship Fund. Envelopes will be available at the church. A heartfelt thank you for all the support the family has received during this difficult time. Online condolences may be sent to the family at: www.rldfuneralhome.com. Jim's funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the RADER-LYNCH AND DODDS FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICE, 124 E. High St., London.

I remember Dr Herman when he interviewed me for vet school. Although we spoke for only a short time I remember him fondly. I would have liked to have thanked him for helping me into this crazy profession. Deepest sympathies to family and friends...

I was a freshmen in vet school when I went to the London Vet Hospital and started to work for Doc Herman. Doc was a tremendous mentor that took pride in teaching vet students what it meant to be in country practice. He taught us that the job went far beyond helping animal. Whenever I was asked in practice by a student to ride along and learn about practice I always remembered what Dr. Herman did for me and the friends I bought out there while I was in vet school. I always tried my best to show them the love of the profession that Dr. Herman had. He left a legacy of mentorship and will always be remembered for that.

Our daughter, Olivia Patterson, worked with Jim Herman and enjoyed every minute of it. She adored him. She loved going out to the farms with him to attend a sick animal. She spoke of him very highly. I am sure he will be missed and he will be a friend that Olivia will never forget. I am thankful that she was treated so kindly by such a wonderful man. Sincerely, Helen Swearingen (Olivia Patterson's mom)

Doc was the best vet london ever had.he really cared about his patience more than money.once i found a dog that had been hit by a car.he wanted to unload it from our car so we wouldnt get bit.he got bit.he fixed the dog which had to have surgery.he did all this out of his pocket and made sure he found the dog a good home.he kept in touch with us to let us keep updated on the dog.He took care of all our pets and if we were hard pressed for money he would bill us at his cost and let us pay on time.im sorry for your loss .He was and always will be a great man.loved and cared for by many more than he probably realized.

Mary Anne and family, Am so sorry to hear of Doc's passing. I truly loved working for him and it is a joy to know you all. Working at London Animal Hospital was one of the high points in my life, and it was a fun experience too. He was so ornery at times, but made sure business came first. Will never forget him and his sense of humor. Truly a great man. Mary Kay & Jim

Friday, March 14, 2014, the State of Ohio, the USA and possibly the world lost a great soul. James Herman was a kind man, excellent father and grandfather, community pillar and the bar to set the standards of a Godly man. It will be hard to replace such a void in all of our lives. Goodbye and rest in peace "Uncle Jim".

I was so sad to hear the Doc had died. I really loved him. He was so dear to everyone. My grandmother, Ethyl Wilson, collected canes. We were at an auction once and Doc bought a lot that had some canes in it. My grandmother asked if he would want to sell any of the canes. He gave them to her. She was delighted. He was a wonderful man. You have my deepest sympathy.
