John McConnell Obituary

McCONNELL John H. McConnell, business leader, philanthropist, founder of Worthington Industries and owner of the Columbus Blue Jackets passed away on April 25, 2008. He was born May 10, 1923 in Pughtown, West Virginia. The son of a steel worker, McConnell grew up during the Great Depression. He served aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga during World War II and married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Rardin upon discharge from the Navy. He then used the GI bill to enter Michigan State University, where he studied business and played football. While working for Weirton Steel Corp., McConnell identified a niche in the industry for custom steel processing services. He used his 1952 Oldsmobi1e as collateral for a loan and, in 1955, launched Worthington Industries and the steel processing industry. A replica of that 1952 Oldsmobile is a proud part of the company's innovative heritage and is displayed in the company headquarters lobby. Today, the company he founded in Columbus, Ohio, is traded on the New York Exchange and employs 8,000 people in 69 facilities in 10 countries. It has annual sales of approximately $3 billion. He served as Chairman and CEO until 1993 when his son, John P. McConnell assumed that role and Mr. McConnell became Chairman Emeritus. Although he stepped down from a formal leadership role in the company in 2002, McConnell's leadership style, which has been included in business curriculum at Harvard University and praised by management guru Tom Peters, still drives the company's culture. That philosophy, based on the Golden Rule: "We treat our customers, employees, investors and suppliers as we would like to be treated," is the subject of McConnell's 2004 book, "Our Golden Rule". Through his humanitarian and community efforts, McConnell became widely recognized as one of Columbus' most generous citizens. His charitable contributions lead to the McConnell Heart Hospital at Riverside Hospital, which provides treatment and prevention services for heart-related illnesses. The more than $15 million donation to develop the hospital was the largest gift ever received by Riverside Hospital or its parent company, OhioHealth. In 1997, McConnell led a group of investors to bring the National Hockey League to Columbus. The Columbus Blue Jackets played its first game in September 2000. The arrival of the Blue Jackets brought an influx of development and community pride to Columbus. Before the team even took the ice, McConnell made sure the Blue Jackets organization would serve its community in other ways too. The Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation was established in March of 2000 to help improve the quality of life throughout central Ohio. McConnell also was one of the early investors in the Columbus Crew Major League Soccer franchise and previously was a minority owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball club and was a minority owner of the Columbus Destroyers. Through his work ethic, business acumen, philanthropy, sense of community and genuine desire to do the right thing for his customers, employees and community, McConnell established himself as a leader not only in Columbus, but also throughout the steel industry and the business world. McConnell was named Chief Executive Officer of the Year by Financial World Magazine and Industry Week magazine recognized him for Excellence in Management. He was the recipient of the Horatio Alger Award and the National Football Foundation Gold Medal Award. He was a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and received the Ohio Governor's Award and the Michigan State University Outstanding Alumni Award. He was inducted into the Junior Achievement National Business Hall of Fame, the Central Ohio Business Hall of Fame and the Columbus Hall of Fame. Mr. McConnell was preceded in death by his wife Peggy R. McConnell. He is survived by his son, John P. (Amy) McConnell of Galena, Ohio; and his daughter, Margaret of New Orleans, Louisiana. Mr. McConnell is also survived by seven grandchildren, Casey and Jennifer Kollis, John H., II, Jessica, Porter and Colin McConnell and Luke Edmonds; brother, Robert McConnell and special friend, Robert McDaniel. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the RUTHERFORD-CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, 515 High Street, Worthington, Ohio 43085, (614) 885-4006. Sign the online guestbook at www.dispatch.com/obituaries

Memories and Condolences
for John McConnell

Not sure what to say?

September 22, 2008

We are indeed saddened by the loss of John McConnell earlier this year. I was privileged to meet with him and his team when I visited the company in 1996 from South Africa after watching a video of Wothington Industries by Tom Peters. I was so honoured and struck by the kindness and generosity of Mr McConnell that when I got home to South Africa we named our son, on his birth, Bryce McConnell Burke. Bryce is 12 years old today and our only regret is that we did not get the opportunity for Bryce to meet Mr McConnell. I practice his methodology as best as I can in treating others the way you would like to be treated. Mr McConnell will be sorely missed. Our very best regards, Allan, Bridgette and Bryce McConnell Burke, South Africa

My sincere sympathies to the McConnell family and all those who knew and loved John H. McConnell. My father worked at Weirton Steel at one time and my roots are in that tri-state area, although my home has been in Columbus for years.

For an upcoming temp interview with WI, I was exploring the company website. After reading 23 pages of touching tributes to Mr. McConnell – many of which put a lump in my throat – I felt compelled to include mine. I have always heard of the wonderful philosophies, values and ethics Mr. McConnell imparted to his organizations, including the Golden Rule, and the great philanthropic contributions he made. I never had the pleasure to meet him; however, am very appreciative for all he did for the Columbus area and for many individuals and families.

I recall reading years ago, in various articles by Tom Peters and others, about WI's reputation for excellence and being among the best companies to work for in America. I have always been intrigued by the operations of organizations, having seen firsthand the good, the bad and the ugly, and have a difficult time understanding the latter two. John McConnell created the good, for which I so admire him, enabling him to give back to so many. Among so many other things, he was truly one of the leading men who made Columbus the wonderful city it is today. He touched so many lives – obviously throughout the world, and I am sure there are many important things he did of which no one will ever be aware, all the way to the simple acknowledging smile in the hallway and the shaking of a greasy hand. That's the way great men are.

A life well-lived – a loving and caring life, an ethical life, a humanitarian and philanthropic life – a life that continues to contribute to the greater good even after death – what a great legacy – Mr. McConnell was one of those greats.

Dear John P and family,
I was saddened to read in the news that your dad, a good and kind man, has died. As I think back on my 5 years of working at Worthington Steel Company in Louisville, KY (1972-1977) and working with you, I want to thank your dad for my experiences of living and working by such a simple, yet strong wonderful leadership style and philosophy ~ service for others and the golden rule. It continues to carry me through my life to this day.
My sympathy and prayers are with you John P., and with your family. I am humbly confident that "Well done, good and faithful servant" are the words that welcomed him home. Mickey Toon Holtz (Waukesha, WI)

I just meet Mr. McConnell history today as I was surfing the web after some information for a new business I want to start here in Spain. For the litle I know he must have been a great man as not many CEOs will walk the line to listen and talk to the "lower level" even knowing then by name. Humble and Blessed left a great sample of his doings for us to learn and follow. Good Luck on your next mission.

Dear J.P. and McConnell family,
My sincere sympathy and empathy for the loss of your dad & grandpa. My dad, Dr. C.L. "Rusty" Mcconnell passed away Easter day last year. He was your dad's first cousin. He called your dad "Jack" when they were little. My father often spoke of fond memories of Uncle Paul and Aunt Mary Louise McConnell. Saddly I don't remember meeting them, I was too young at the last family reunion I quess. I have only 1 picture of my grandpa Bill McConnell with his younger brother Paul. Dad told this story several times. In fact it usually followed some discipline requiring the "rod of learning".
One summer Rusty was visiting Uncle Paul and Aunt Mary Louise, John (Jack) and Robert. He really enjoyed time with his cousins. It was a hot sticky summer and the three boys decided to fill a huge hole with water to make a pool or pond to swim in. I don't know how long they worked on this industrious project but in the end they completely emptied the water cistern!! Boy was Uncle Paul angry. (I didn't know Paul was water master for the town) He spanked John as my Dad, Rusty, looked on,then Robert and looked at Rusty who said "You won't spank me will you Uncle Paul?? with a half grin on is face, but he did !!
Dad said it was a sign that Uncle Paul loved him as his own. Now these two redheaded cousins I pray are drinking from "the well that never runs dry, the well of water springing up into everlasting life ". Blessings to all thru our Lord Jesus.
Love Sherri PS I have two red head children! stong genes

Every Spring, Mr. Mac hosted a dinner at the Double Eagle Country Club for the Worthington Industries Retirees. At this event last April, my husband, Nelson, and I spoke with Mr. Mac and thanked him for this lovely event and told him that it meant so very much to the Retirees.
I also told him that I would always remember the story he shared with his employees about being poor & having to put "cardboard" inside his shoes when the bottoms had worn so thin that there was a hole. I told Mr. Mac that I was a coal miner's daughter from S.W. Pennsylvania and that I knew all about that cardboard inside shoes. I thanked him for my job at WI and the opportunity to serve his company as an Executive Assistant for 18 years. He said "Well Honey, I guess we both have come a long way." He than gave me that little smile and a wink.

Goodby, Mr. Mac. I will miss you!!

Our deepest sympathy to J.P. and Family. May God Bless you.

My mother worked for the company for nearly 20 years and recently retired. She started out down the hall from Mr. Mac.
As a teen I would stop by my mother's work, and was fortunate to meet him several times. I helped volenteer at company picnics and holiday festivals on occasion, and would see Mr. Mac behind the scenes. He was so kind, generous, and always so humble. I grew up knowing Worthington Industries and the McConnell family from my mother who truly loves this company. I grew up holding Worthington to the highest standards.

I am proud to say I am now a Worthington Industries employee. Nearly 3 years now. I believe in the moral character that this company was brought up on, and the quality of those who work for it, thanks to the McConnells. Our thoughts and prayers are with the McConnell family. We sincerely thank you for all you've done for ours.

My condolences to the McConnell family and friends. I am happy to know that there was such a man on this earth in this life, who did and cared so much.

I went on a Syracuse Crunch Booster Club trip to Columbus and the Nationwide Arena in February 2003. I was told of how much of a transformation there was to the area that is now known as the Arena District when the Bluejackets were brought to Columbus. I thought that the area was beautiful and all the businesses and development were great. I really enjoyed my stay in your city, and recommend it to other people, especially Crunch and Bluejacket fans. I know that Mr. McConnell will be greatly missed.

I am fortunate to be a small part of this great company founded by Mr McConnell, that is well-regarded around the world in its industry sectors. I have had the opportunity to interact with companies that are titans in our industry and to speak about our company to people in countries where we don't even have a presence, and they all know about and respect Worthington Industries. This is a great testament to the legacy built by Mr. Mac; one that remains ingrained in the core philosophy of the company and its employees. My family and I pay our respects to Mr. Mac and convey our best wishes to the McConnell family.

I have been a proud employee of Worthington Industries for 21 years and was fortunate enough to meet Mr. Mac on several occasions.

My fondest memories had to do with our Holiday Festival we have each year for the employees and their families in Columbus. He wanted every child who had to depend on someone to get there, to go away with a gift. I was responsible for purchasing these gifts and getting them to the children. He told me to "Buy enough for the employees, but buy extra so we can give them away to the less fortunate". He never wanted any attention or credit for this, as he politely refused to do a tv interview. "That's just the way you're supposed to treat people" he said. Mr. Mac also flew Santa Claus in by helicopter, which was a huge treat for us all.
He always used to sit just off the stage where the kids visited with Santa. He got such a kick out of watching the children visit with Santa and receive their gifts.

I will miss seeing Mr. Mac at the various company events and at the Blue Jackets games. You were truly one-of-a-kind and will be greatly missed by many. Thanks for everything you've done for WI, the City of Columbus, and the City of Worthington.

My prayers are with the McConnell family, and all that knew him. God Bless...

It was so very sad to hear of Mr. McConnell's passing. My condolences to the McConnell family. I remember the old days when Mr McConnell would make trips through the plant on hot summer days in his golf cart. He would go from machine to machine and ask how your day was going and offered a cold can of pop. I always thought that was neat how he would take time out of his day for us. It meant alot to me. I also remember at the company picnic one year, some guys and myself won the talent contest as Don Ho and the Coconuts. At the end our show we went out and placed our lei's on Mr McConnell and he turned so red. You will be missed Mr. McConnell.

I have never worked for Worthington Industries or for the Columbus Blue Jackets organization. I have never played golf at the Double Eagle Golf Course and I never had the privilege to meet Mr John H McConnell. I am simply a life-long Columbus resident and passionate hockey fan.
When Mr Mac is mentioned, words such as generous, kind, innovative, and genuine are often used to describe him. Though, I never met Mr Mac, I am deeply saddened by his passing. I know that the McConnell family lost a great father, those close to him lost a great friend, Columbus has lost a great leader, and the world has lost a great man. Undoubtedly, Mr Mac will be missed by all who knew him (and by those of us who didn't). Mr Mac has my sincerest gratitude and The McConnell Family has my deepest sympathy. Mr Mac was a blessing and his legacy will carry on!

I never had the priviledge of meeting Mr. McConnell personally but I have met him through many of the wonderful people with whom I have interacted with in the Worthington Industries family and also through our philosophy.

I hope to always remember a most impressive remark that I heard Mr. McConnell make was during an interview we were watching at the Corporate Training Center. It was in response to being asked why he started the company and the intergration of the Philosophy, etc. To answer that he simply said, "I love people." What more could be said? Only his works, which remain, speak louder.

A big man with a big heart. The first time I met John H. I had grease up to my elbows. Big John offered to shake my hand. I refused, I told him I did not want to get his hand dirty. He grabbed my hand and shook it anyway, squishing the grease out between his hand and mine. I gave him my shop towel..He wiped the grease away, wished me a Merry Christmas and said " I will shake any of my employees hands who work hard".

Over the course of 8 years, I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. McConnell on numerous occasions through his grandson Karl (KC). It all started when I worked for Worthington Cylinders one summer during college. Mr. McConnell was a very kind and generous man who upheld his convictions and was very honorable. He always treated me like family and is someone that is a true role model for our society. He treated everyone with respect and dignity. He will be missed, but his legacy will live on through the good work he did.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family in their time of grief, especially Mrs. Kollis and KC.

To the Mcconnell family and friends, My blessings and condolences to you all. I had the honor and pleasure of being employed as Worthington Industries first implant travel agent where I grew to know and love all who worked for them. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Mcconnell on several occasions and his employees made me feel like family always. You are soaring with the angels now and they are as blessed to have you as we all were here. God Speed to you now. Thank you for believing in me as I believed in you.

We would like to express our deepest sympathies for the entire McConnell family. We did not know Mr. McConnell personally, but we are huge Blue Jacket fans, and could see his true sense of being and generosity on his face at every game we saw him at. He was an amazing man and he will live always in our hearts. Our hearts go out to each and every one of you.

My husband and I have met the McConnell family and send out our deepest sympathy. My husband can remember his Father and John hunting ducks/geese in the Upper Penisula of Michigan and the great stories that came home.

I met my wife when she was just an intern working for Worthington Industries. She later became employed their and I was able to sit in the owners box at a Blue Jackets game. It was one of the best experiences of my life. I remember how well my wife speaks of Mr. Mac and enjoyed just being around him in the owner's box. What I remember most was him looking around the owners box and wanting to know everyone's story. Not because he was making sure no one was in their that shouldn't be but because he really wanted to know about each person around him. He was truly a remarkable man.

My name is Wayne G. McConnell, 154 Embar Street, Gate City, VA 24251 e-mail: [email protected] I am the McConnell family genealogist. Would like to know if John H. McConnell links back to Immigrant George and Eva Barbara Kornman McConnell in Lebanon,PA 1746-1820? I did not know this John McConnell, however his friends describe him just like my father John McConnell's friends described him at his death. Columbus Ohio has lost a great leader. Sincere condolences from the Scott County,Virginia McConnell Families. Sincerely, Wayne G. McConnell.

To John P and other family members:
I remember playing up near the "railroad" and W.I. Once your Dad came out and asked what we were doing. After explaining to him, he laughed, gave us a stick of candy and told us to be careful, have fun, and don't stay away from home too long. He was a wonderful businessman and made numerous donations, but the thing I remember most was his warmth and smile. "Well done, good and faithful servant" Prayers for the entire family, but a special prayer for you John. He was so proud of you!!

To the McConnell family I want to share my deepest sympathy, I did not know Mr. Mac on a personal level but I am a Blue Jackets fan and I saw him at just about every game. He was a wonderful owner and he will be greatly missed. He had a giving heart and many of us cannot say that these days. When the Jackets make the playoffs this year it will be for Mr. Mac. Thank you and my sympathy for his family. He will be missed and I can speak for all Jacket fans.
