KEVIN BRADLEY Obituary

KEVIN G. BRADLEY MORRISTOWN / HOLLYWOOD, Fla. - Kevin G. Bradley, 58, of Morristown and Hollywood, Fla., passed away March 6, 2011 after a long illness. Kevin was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. where he grew up and attended Cathedral Preparatory Seminary in Brooklyn, N.Y. and Cathedral College in Douglaston, N.Y. He spent his summers at Clairvaux, a seminarian boys camp in Stowe, where his love for Vermont began. In 1972, he made Vermont his home. He was hired by the Burlington Police Department in 1973 where he was employed until 1978. During that period of time Kevin worked as an undercover drug investigator. One of his proudest accomplishments lead to the arrest and conviction of Paul Lawrence, a corrupt police officer who falsified evidence and testimony that lead to the unjust convictions of hundreds of accused victims. During this investigation, Kevin worked with Senator Patrick Leahy, who was then the Chittenden County State's Attorney, in bringing this corrupt police official to justice. Kevin left the Burlington Police Department to pursue his law degree from Suffolk University in Boston, Mass. Kevin returned to Vermont and worked for the law firm of Desautels and Bergeron. He successfully ran for the Office of the Chittenden County State's Attorney in 1983 and served as the State's Attorney until 1988. From 1988 to 1997 Kevin was employed as Sector Counsel for the United States Border Patrol in Swanton. In 1997, Kevin was appointed Immigration Judge with the U.S. Immigration Court in Miami, Fla. Kevin will be greatly missed and remembered by family and friends, including his longtime friend and law enforcement partner at the Burlington Police Department, David Demag. Kevin and friends shared a passion for motorcycles and enjoyed many cross country trips. Kevin is survived by his wife, Karen Bradley of Morristown; his mother, Ann Bradley; brother and sister-in-law, Brendan and Christine Bradley; and sister, Maryellen Bradley of Englewood, Fla. He is also survived by one of his many beloved dogs, Roxy Bradley. A memorial service will be held in Stowe at a later date.

Judge Bradley was not only my colleague at the Miami court but good friend. I always felt better as an individual after spending time with him. He had that kind of impact on people. I keep near my desk one of his motorcycle license plates and picture of us together at the Police Memorial museum in Washington D.C., that we visited together. All those who knew Kevin well miss him on a daily basis. Judge Dan Dowell / Miami

I think about Kevin often and have such fond memories of him. When Kevin became an Immigration Judge in Miami I had the privilege of working with him for many years. You could always count on him to take the toughest assignments and carry them out to perfection. At his investiture as a Judge, he made the most beautiful and romantic remarks about his wife. He loved his family, his friends, his country, and his dogs.

It is often said that the good die young. I appeared before Judge Kevin Bradley a few times and recall having had the opportunity to speak with him on the occasion of the retirement of one of the local judges. Judge Bradley told me about how much he enjoyed motorcycling and also mentioned that he was skilled as a carpenter. In reading the thoughts and feelings shared by his friends and those he was close to we can see that he was a great American man, a salt of the earth. In court, Judge Bradley had a common sense approach to the law which he applied to each case in a fair and impartial manner. More significantly, though, when the law mandated the denial of the requested relief, Judge Bradley always gave that man or woman their dignity.
Kevin Bradley's warm and kind spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to have known him well.

I had the pleasure of practicing in front of Judge Bradley as an attorney with Catholic Legal Services. I remember one particular case in which Judge Bradley granted residency to my severely disabled client. The client began weeping and walking towards the bench. I lept from my seat to stop the client. Before I reached him I heard Judge Bradley say, "it is ok counsel." I looked over and Judge Bradely walked down from the bench and gave the client a hug.

He was a fair and impartial Judge. From what I witnessed that day in court he was a good man too.

Kevin was the kind of judge that everyone loved. He was fair, courteous, well versed in the law, willing to hear all testimony with an open mind, and always made sure that every party in his court was allowed to maintain dignity. He was one of the kindest and most generous judges I ever knew.

He was not only a very valuable member of the Miami court, but he also was a major asset to the entire Immigration court system. He was willing to go anywhere at anytime that he was needed to hear cases. That unselfish approach to his work was just one example of his kind, considerate and giving nature.

Kevin has left a lasting legacy in our hearts and in the hearts of all who knew him. We will miss him very much.
