Randolph Robert Obituary

Robert Randolph Beauregard Robert was born on June 4, 1922 in New Orleans, LA, the only child of Alonzo Raphael ("Babe") and Mary Elizabeth Phillips Robert. Randolph grew up in New Orleans, graduated from the Isadore Newman School and Tulane University, served as Lieutenant j.g. in the United States Coast Guard in the Philippines during WW II, and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he held a graduate research fellowship in Marketing. On May 6, 1946, he married Ruth Eleanor Carlisle at the rectory of St. John's Roman Catholic Church in Bangor, Maine, and together they raised five children, Ruth Eleanor, Nancy Carlisle, Randolph Beauregard Jr., Anne Carlisle and Margaret Carlisle Robert in New Britain, Connecticut. After Ruth's death in 1975, Randolph married Susan King of the U.K., May 1, 1976. They made their home in Columbus, Ohio. Susan's three adult sons, Michael, Richard, and Nicholas joined the family. Susan died in 2003. In his professional life, Randolph served as Vice-President and Treasurer for the Fafnir Bearing Company (New Britain, Connecticut), later acquired by Textron Inc., then as President of Perkins Machine and Gear Company (West Springfield, Massachusetts), and finally as Executive Vice-President for European Operations and Chief Financial and Administration Officer, and member of the Board of Ranco, Inc. (Columbus, Ohio) until his retirement in 1989. In New Britain, Randolph served on the Board of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, the New Britain Library, the New Britain School Board, was a member of the Toastmasters, and the Shuttle Meadow Country Club. In Ohio, while living at Friendship Village of Dublin, Ohio, he was active on residents' committees, and was a dedicated member of St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Dublin. Randy was known for his impressive vocabulary, his lifelong love of learning, particularly about the medical field, and for his dedication to his professional work. He had a well-developed sense of humor, deeply loved his family, international travel, other people and long conversations. He was compassionate and generous. Randolph leaves behind children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Ruth Kath with Eleanor and Jessica (Klara Valentinsson), Nancy Franz with Andrew (Katherine), Randolph B. Jr (Donna) with Julie, Maria Robert Grimshaw (Jordan), Randolph B. III (Ashley); Anne Tagg (Ralph) with Jennifer Tagg Richardson (Ryan) and their children, Benjamin and William) and Alexander (Kristie); Margaret Kelly (Thomas) with Heather (Amanda Fox), James (Maegan) and son Zachary, and Sean; Michael (Ann "Liz") King with Lisa (Ken) and daughters, Francesca and Olivia, Miles (Stephanie) and daughters, Cathy and Susie; Richard (Lan) King, Nicholas (Carolyn) with son, Freddie and daughter, Alex White (John) and their children, William and Elliott; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Carlisle Speirs and Pauline Carlisle; nieces and nephews, Julie Speirs Brett, Garrett Speirs, Steven Spiers, David Carlisle, Robin Carlisle, Stephen Carlisle, Lindsay Carlisle, Ellen Carlisle, Mary Hilton Hess, Susan Hilton Gays, William Hilton, Margaret Hilton, Norman Carlisle Jr., Kendall Carlisle Temper, Craig Carlisle, Todd Carlisle Roast, Christopher Carlisle, Collin Carlisle, Jonathan Carlisle, Leslie Carlisle Knowlton, and Susan Carlisle; cousins, Mary Phillips Watt (Robert), Beverly Robert Frater (Bryan), Carolyn Robert Speed (James), and Kearny Robert Jr. (Susan). Randolph was preceded in death by his first wife Ruth Carlisle Robert, and his second wife Susan Robert, parents, son-in-law Peter Kath, uncle C.H. Phillips III, aunt Alice A. ("Aunt Boots") Robert, cousins William Robert and Kearny Quinn Robert, brothers- and sisters-in-law George (Elizabeth) Carlisle, Norman Carlisle, John Carlisle, Robert (Geraldine) Carlisle, Mary Carlisle (William) Hilton, and Charles (Patricia) Carlisle, two nieces Barbara Speirs Stevens and Mary Carlisle Schultheis. Last Rites were administered by Randolph's long-time friend and pastor, the Rev. Stephen Smith. Service will be held on SATURDAY, MARCH 15, 2014 at 3 o'clock P.M. at ST. PATRICK'S CHURCH, 7121 Muirfield Drive, Dublin, Ohio 43017. Presider is the Rev. Cricket Park. Scattering of cremains will be at the Kingwood Memorial Garden, Columbus, Ohio, where Susan's ashes were also scattered. The Rutherford Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for the family. In Randolph's memory, a tree will be planted on the grounds of St. Patrick's Church at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to St. Patrick Church of Dublin, Ohio, or to a charity of the donor's choice. Condolences to the immediate and extended Roberts family on the passing of this great patriarch. Randy Sr. Left us all with many memories of his experiences and thirst for knowledge. While we must mourn his passing, we must also celebrate his rich life.
