To the family of Father Lavelle,
Father Lavelle was the most wonderful priest that I have ever had the pleasure to meet. He was so helpful when my husband was ill. It just so happened that he was at St. Ann's Hospital visiting patients and ran into me. He asked why I was there and if my husband ever got Baptized. I told him no because of Don's illness we could never make it happen. So, he said we are going upstairs and getting this done now. So my husband was Baptized at St. Ann's Hospital because Father Lavelle was there at the right time. This was one of the things my husband wanted in the worse way, and Father Lavelle made it happen because of his kindness and his wonderful ways of being a priest. Don passed away shortly after that. I cannot say enough good things about him. I could sit in church and listen to him talk, not preach, forever. He also married my Daughter, Tamara Dolinski. My prayers go out to his family with my deepest sympathies.

I served Mass many times for Father LaVaelle , both as an adult , and as a teenager , he also was great comfort when my mother passed away. She had looked to him , and converted to being a Catholic , shortly before her death. Father LaVaelle taught Religion at Holy Family High school , which I attended. He was an extraordinary person with a great sense of humor, and this world has lost a good person . RIP Father , we will miss you .

Fr. Lavelle was our first parser when we married and moved to Columbus. He baptized our first child at St. Agnes Church on the west side and ended all his baptisms with, " There's another Catholic on the Hilltop. He was a wonderful councilor too, and a fine priest. He is missed.

Fr. Lavelle was first, and foremost, a Holy priest. For many of us, he was the most beloved confessor, who listened without judgement, but listened as a vicar of Christ. His warmth and compassion for mankind will live on through each and every soul he touched. He will be missed, but will also be a welcome soul to meet up with in heaven.

I attended grade school at St. Agnes in the late 50's to mid 60's. Father Lavalle was the assistant Pastor. We loved him. He was so funny! He was very active and visible in all Parish events. He was there for the masses, communions, weddings and funerals. But,he also watched school sports, plays, concerts and attended the clubs of the Parish. He ate in the cafeteria every day. And he personally handed out our report cards, with positive and funny comments. My parents invited him several times to our home for dinner. He was an excellent counselor and speaker. His sermons were legendary. He helped so many poor people in our Parish. Over the years he was moved around to other assignments. In the seventies he returned as our Pastor. He married many of my friends and relatives including my brother. In 2009 Father was retired but still helping out at St. Pauls and visiting the sick at St. Ann's. My brother was very sick for several months and he went every week to bring him communion and counsel him. He presided at my brothers funeral and comforted all of us. It meant a lot to me and my family to have him with us. He reminded us to never lose faith and eternal life is our reward. RIP Father Lavalle. We will never forget you.

Fr. Lavelle knew what compassion was. He had a light and understanding way of looking at serious things. Compassion and good sense of humor were also his hallmarks. He led our retreats when I was a student at De Sales High School. He was someone I could refer people to for pastoral counseling. Later on in life I ad the honor of concelebrating a Mass with him. Our hearts are so sad about Fr. Lavelle passing on. He was a loving man and a kind priest. He helped us in so many ways, including pastoring and counseling us through my dad's long illness. My dad's funeral mass was touching and spiritual and sentimental. Fr. Lavelle was there for us. All three of our children were servers for Fr. Lavelle at St Matthias. He baptized them and gave them First Communion. We send our prayers and deepest sympathy to his family and loved ones.
I know God welcomed Fr. Lavelle with open arms. I can imagine God saying "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Father Lavelle taught me at Bishop Fenwick High School in Lancaster Ohio in the mid-60s. In his religion class he always challenged us us and made us think.

Father took special interest in me after I suffered a disabling fall in 1967 which resulted in me being quadriplegic. He came to visit often and brought me Communion.

I always thought Father would write a book that would become a bestseller. Many of his stories were quite enlightening and were worth sharing.

Rest in peace Father Lavelle.
