It is with the deepest of heartfelt sadness that I say goodbye to such a gifted and compassionate man. Richard had the ability to make everyone he met feel special. From the very first day of 1st grade when I walked into Mrs. Marx's classroom and sat next to him, I knew I had a friend and brother for life. The impact that he left upon the community of Allen Park will never be forgotten. Although he lived more of his life in the Columbus area, he left an imprint on the hearts of all who knew him from his past. He lived a lot of life in a short amount of time and never had the ability to reach his true potential. His sense of humor was the most entertaining, genuine and endearing quality any person could possess. And, he had an eternal youth that served as a connection to the past we long to hang on to. Richard Lay will be missed dearly by the entire community he grew up in. God bless the Lay family

Sorry to hear of your loss may God be with all of you, he was a great friend through out my younger years, I will cherish the memories I had growing up with my friend.

February 16, 2015

I had known Richard from our first day of junior high. Obviously, once he and Lisa left AP and eventually settled to raise their family in Columbus, the years passed and our paths only crossed occasionally. But, each time they did, I was reminded and happy to be around that same kind-hearted, caring guy - soft spoken, a genuine laugh, a warm smile - who made those around him feel special; this was Richard. And, not surprising, after having spent a little time with him here in AP of late, these characteristics were still prevalent; never an unkind word about anyone and seeking out the goodness in life as best he could.

So, from Sophocles, "One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life. That word is love." This quote reminds me that we can set aside any faults and troubles of others or of our own and know "We love because God first loved us." [1 John 4:19].

Prayers and sympathies to you and your children Lisa, to all who Richard loved and to all who loved him.

RIP dear, old friend.
