Robert D. Battershell, age 93, passed away peacefully with his children by his side on January 22. He was born on January 23, 1931, in New Philadelphia, Ohio, to Emory and Theresa Battershell.
Robert's journey as a scholar and scientist began at Bowling Green State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry. His career was temporarily interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War, serving in Germany. After his service, Robert used the GI Bill to further his education, earning a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Purdue University. It was at Purdue where he met and married his wife, Thelma Mumby, enjoying 58 years of devoted partnership.
Robert's professional career was marked by several notable achievements. He began his work with Callery Chemical in Pennsylvania before making his mark in the field of chemistry with Diamond Alkali. One of his most significant contributions was the discovery of chlorothalonil, a widely used agricultural fungicide. Robert was known for his sharp mind, organization, and logical thinking. Later in his career, he found great fulfillment in overseeing the licensing of new chemicals.
In addition to his scientific endeavors, Robert was a dedicated public servant. He was a committed member of the Painesville United Methodist Church for over 40 years and later North Broadway United Methodist Church in Columbus. He also served as a city councilman in Painesville and dedicated countless hours to Habitat for Humanity, including serving as president of the Painesville chapter.

He is survived by his children: Anne Battershell, Carol Battershell, John (Lisa) Battershell, and Mary (Ken) Whalen; his grandchildren, Alex, Adam, and Dana Battershell, and Catherine and Edward Whalen; his companion, Mariellen Miller; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A man of faith, intellect, and generosity, Robert's love for his family was profound. In his final Christmas, he gathered his loved ones and shared his desire to ensure that family reunions would continue for generations to come. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
