Robert Hoag Obituary

Hoag Robert Stanley Hoag, 83 of Columbus, Ohio and Delray Beach, Florida, passed on peacefully Friday, March 1, 2013 with his loving family at his side. He was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife of 58 years, Louise, who he met in the third grade and cherished dearly. He was President of Hoag & Hoag Insurance and Managing Director of Marsh McLennan. Bob graduated from Upper Arlington High School in 1947 where he played on the undefeated football team, undefeated regular season basketball team and state finalist in baseball, and he was the City swimming champion in the freestyle sprint. He has many special, lifelong friends from the class of '47. He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1951 where he was on the basketball and golf teams after playing football at Colgate University his freshman year. He was an avid supporter of Ohio State athletics and a huge Ohio State football and basketball fan. He had a lifelong passion for the game of golf and played around the world. His favorite pastime was giving golf lessons, solicited or unsolicited, to golfers of all skill levels, whether the world's best golfer or those who made contact with the ball occasionally. He had a special place in his heart for Muirfield Village Golf Club, where at the privilege of the Founder, he was honored to serve as Co-founder and Chairman, and was co-chairman of The Memorial Tournament. He played in the U.S. Amateur and Australian Open, the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am for 30 years, won club championships at Scioto, and was on the Board of the Greenbrier. He was an unconditional and loyal friend to many, of all ages, and to characters like himself of all walks of life. He was a financial supporter and advisor to those beginning their college careers and starting new businesses, and those in financial need. He was a good storyteller, graceful, frank, had a vivid imagination and was always finding unconventional ways of accomplishing things. He was a wonderful and inspirational father to his sons, Kenny, Wes (Kim) and Bobby (Marnie); and doting and loving grandfather to Lindsay and Bo, whom he adored. He was also preceded in death by his parents Kenneth "Preach" and Marjorie Hoag. He is also survived by sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Elaine (David) Smith, Ann (Jack) Scollay and William (Milly) Fallon. He will be honored by a memorial service at First Community Church, 1320 Cambridge Boulevard on Saturday, March 9, at 1:30 p.m. followed by a reception at Brownlee Hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to The Memorial Tournament Natal Intensive Care Unit at Nationwide Children's Hospital or the Jack Grout Scholarship, 5750 Memorial Drive, Dublin, Ohio 43017. To the Hoag Family:
I was one of the fortunate ones to receive an unsolicited lesson from your Dad while playing the Golf Club along with Chuck Perry. I never did learn a correct grip! We will miss him.

Dear Mr. Hoag,
If you could only know what a profound influence you had on so many us.
How we cherished the time we spent with you which you gave so freely and without condition.
You defined what it means to live life to the fullest.
You found positives in all things.
And yes Mr. Hoag there is "a lot of life out there" and you topped that list.
You will forever hold a very special place in my heart.
