He lived a long and happy life and will be remembered for his loving and generous nature, his wisdom, patience, strength, and good humor. He was born October 8, 1928 to Louis Charles and Arkie Belle (Thompson) Nicklaus in Columbus, Ohio, and is predeceased by his parents, sister Jesse, brothers Frank and Charlie, and his sister Dorothy (Duckworth). Above all, Bob was a devoted husband and the father of three daughters, Linda (Riek) of Fulton, Missouri, Kathy (Elliott) of Lakeland, Florida and Carolyn (Gleason) of Woodinville, Washington. Bob's interests included raising and showing American Saddlebred horses, waterskiing, growing prize-winning roses, and holding Nellie's hand. Dear Daddy, this letter is to you so I hope you can read it. Your going to heaven has left a hole inside me that's very big, very deep, very wide, very high! I miss you, your voice, your kindness, your wisdom. I love and deep respect I have for you is endless. I also respected the true "Love Story" you and mom shared from your first date to her lying in bed with you as you quietly, peacefully passed. You even comforted her with your talks and guidance in the days before. Like everything else in your life you made your passing as easy on all of us as possible. Thank you for that. Daddy, thank you for letting me be the tomboy I was when I was young. Riding the lawnmower on 155 Southington, a bit fast, to renting horses, a trampoline, a huge pool. I was very popular in the neighborhood. Iris, Christi all the elliots enjoyed it too! Great friends. Buckeye Lake was made for me. You taught me to drive the "Linda J" ski boat, even get gas at 8 years old. I loved it, fishing, water skiing, going to get ice cream oh, and the grab bag. So many great times. Remember Chester the duck and his friends? I won at the sweet corn festival. Our pet turtle that our dog dropped into the canal and i dipped and dipped with the net until I got him. Thanks so much daddy it was great. Your effort to make Nicklaus Pharmacy the best and then owning the whole shopping center. Hard work, lots of hours I respected you for that. So proud how handsome you were in your white pharmacy coat. The love I had for horses especially saddlebreds was shared by you and your dad! Our whole family loved it, Mom made them so beautiful! Whether show or pleasure we all loved and enjoyed it. Then you sent me to Stephens College and one of my degrees was in equestrian science. Then you and Mom threw me the best top-notch wedding and I ran stables in Joplin and Ashland for years. Loved it, all because of you. There's so much more I want to thank you-- for great trips being a great grandpa. Dad you're the best, I miss you so much. You are my hero, all my love Linda Maine! PS Hey Daddy please work your magic and save me a spot in heaven next to you!

Dear Grandpa,

Words cannot do justice to describe the way your family loves you. Your daughter Linda has never talked about someone with such admiration and joy as she has telling us stories about her "daddy". I will never forget your smile, laugh and calming presence that you possessed. You could not have been a greater role model to a young man. The way you treated and took care of your family, especially your wife is something that could not be surpassed. I hope to one day become the man that you were. Congratulations grandpa you did it!!
What you created here on earth is the epitome of the American dream.
Robert T Nicklaus a true American Hero
Love you Grandpa..

My father-in-law Bob Nicklaus will live on in our memories. He was a fine and honorable man. My wife Kathy has told me many times how much she loved, admired, and respected him. He had a great sense of humor and made us laugh with his famous jokes and stories. His kindness and generosity are legendary. I thank him for being the ideal role model of what a husband and father should be. Rest in peace.

Bob's brother Charlie was like a father to him. They were in business together, and when they got together with their oldest brother, Frank, they had such fun, telling jokes and singing songs like, “Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport.” Bob took me on three honeymoons and to lunch every Wednesday. We loved to sing hymns together. He didn't want me to get up from our loveseat. He would say, “Honey, sit down and hold my hand.” We went to church for fifty years, and he was a deacon at Worthington Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed watching his nephew Jack play golf, and thought the world of both Jack and Barbara and how they raised their family. We loved to dance. He was a wonderful man, very patient and kind, fair to everyone. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and neighbor. He loved his friends and family.

After losing my dad at the age of 27 I sure needed a father-figure. I didn't have to look far! Bob Nicklaus became my "Dad Nicklaus" in 1983. What great luck on my part-- he stayed my dad for more than 30 years. He offered be great advice, he had a sense of humor that wouldn't stop, he was always there when I needed him. Of course he was always there for his three daughters, his grandchildren and countless friends stretching from Ohio to Florida to Washington state. Where ever he went he left a legacy and a trail of love and support. Dad Nicklaus, I sure miss you, Linda and I will see you upstairs one of these days, golf for me.. I'm afraid Linda is sticking with the horses..RIP!

Dear Grandpa,
you are one of the most incredible men I have ever met, I couldn't have more respect for you. Incredible husband with love for his wife like I have never seen before. Love that you only hear about. A incredible father who passed on so much of his characteristics, kindness, compassion, and respect to all others. You raised three amazing daughters and so many grandchildren. Your legacy will always live on. You are forever in my heart. Till I see you again in heaven. I know your looking down on all of us and I find comfort in knowing you are this family guardian angel. I love you Grandpa.

Bob asked me to work when I quit my paper route. Worked from 1954 to 1970. He said he would turn me into a pharmacist. I laughed.
Have been a pharmacist from 1962 thru today. The old Nicklaus Prescription Center is vacant now. Walked thru it 2 years ago.
Would like to talk to him again....
If anyone writes a biography please let me know.
All who knew him will miss him.

Kathy and family,

I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you for letting me know of his passing.

I am even now weeping for the loss. I have always had tremendous respect for your dad, my boss, too, "Mr. Nicklaus." He was a wonderful, gentlehearted man who smiled through the joyous times... as well as the times I did things that he wasn't too crazy about. Like the time I trimmed the privacy bushes in the backyard. He just smiled and admired those new "sticks" that were standing tall...where the hedges had been. I remember fondly working in the pharmacy. He trusted me to count pills (accept the ones in the safe), work the cash register, deliver Rx and follow the list of things that he would make with that note pad that was often/always in his hand. It was a pleasure to also be sent over to the house to paint a wall, paint the fountain and/or to spend time with your dear sweet mother, "Mrs. Nicklaus" doing other tasks around the house.

May the peace of Christ be in your hearts as you continue to celebrate the legacy of love from your dear one and as you also grieve the loss.

Love to all, Dan Schilling

I'll always remember my grandpa's happy smile, gentle spirit and how he always made me feel me special. The memories I have with my grandpa will forever be treasured. I'll always remember his laugh when he pushed me on the gigantic porch swing at Buckeye Lake and him calling me his "duck-duck girl" when we fed the ducks. He led an inspirational life. I love you grandpa.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Bob for the last 23 years as I have been married to his daughter for 21 years. He has been a great father-in-law to me and a great grandpa to our children. We had some great times watching Ohio State football games together and even went to a Seattle Mariners game together, his first professional baseball game! I will miss him greatly but he leaves behind a great legacy and a wonderful family. We should strive to live our lives as he did.
