Sheldon Berman Obituary

Berman, Sheldon
Sheldon Martin "Shelly" Berman, a long time Ad Man In Columbus, New York and Phoenix, died March 26, 2018 in the arms of his wife and great love of his life, Judith Irwin Berman, after a long battle with cancer. He was 77. He was born January 16, 1941 in Mansfield, OH to Sam and Libby Berman. He graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1959 and began his career in advertising at The Ohio State University in Columbus where he studied journalism, public relations and advertising and served on the board of The Ohio State Lantern. He said that the impact on the community of editorials he wrote for The Lantern surprised him, showed the power of effective communication and promoted his interest in advertising. He created advertising for numerous campus area businesses before graduating in 1963. In 1963 he also married his first wife Barbara Gellis Berman who is the mother of his son and daughter, Marc and Marcia Berman. He began his professional career as a copywriter and advertising manager at the F. & R. Lazarus department store in Columbus and moved on to Downe Communications on Madison Avenue in New York, where he said he felt the excitement of a young marine in combat everyday. In 1969, Mr. Berman returned to Columbus where he formed an advertising agency, Shelly Berman Communicators (SBC Advertising). With his partners Ed Razek and Bill Wickham, they created marketing for leading Columbus businesses including The Limited, Banc One, Ohio National Bank, Bob Evans, Frigidaire, Continental, Pizzuti Real Estate, Big Lots and many more. They opened offices in Oakland, Phoenix and New Orleans and grew the firm into a nationally known force in advertising. Mr. Razek later described Berman saying: "Creative, Concise. Analytical. Pragmatic. A rare combination of business savvy and creative flair. The disciplines I learned from Shel guide me everyday," Mr. Berman was most proud of the talented employees they attracted and trained and the great success so many employees achieved. Mr. Berman sold SBC to Bill Wickham and in 1998 moved to Phoenix, AZ, where he established another ad agency, Xtreem Creative Inc. He said there was nothing in his career he enjoyed more than hiking in the Arizona hills as he composed TV commercials for Barbasol and Pure Silk Shave Cream. He served on the board of directors of Big Lots, Inc. He was preceded in death by his son Marc Berman in 1980. He is survived by his wife, Judith Irwin Berman of Phoenix, a former oncology nurse who became his full time personal oncology manager. Shortly before his death he credited her with managing a fierce war against his cancer and adding joyous years to his life. He is also survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Jon Levy of Powell, Ohio; grandsons, Josh Levy and Alex Levy of Powell, Oh; and numerous friends and colleagues in Ohio and Arizona. He enjoyed doing things with and for his grandsons, investing, trading stocks, eating cheeseburgers, oysters, Irish seafood chowder and was a fan of Apple and The Ohio State Buckeyes. Shel's friends and colleagues may join his family on the afternoon of April 8, 2018 (1-3 p.m.) at Aubergine Private Dining Club, located just a few doors down from Spagio on Grandview Avenue. A brief service will be held around 1:30 p.m.

Year ago, Shel stopped by my office on a way back from an appointment and inquired to what we did at our small graphic design - ad biz office one day. After showing him the portfolio and talking "ad guy stuff", he decided he would give a young 'graphic design, ad punk' a chance with some collaborative work. What a ride! To say I learned a lot would be slighting Shel - we did so many cool and crazy ad/marketing/design projects together for Macaroons and Xtreem Creative - it was like getting a doctorate in the advertising. With his keen eye and intellect, he always pushed beyond the first line of creative to problem solving and finding the core root of what it took to sell something, be it product or message. His thinking and analytical skills were amazing. He really had the 'gift' and his calling was that of an AD MAN and I was absolutely thrilled to work with him. With each job in my career, I tried to impart Shel's knowledge, thinking and zeal on to my coworkers and staff. Whenever any professional accolades came my way I couldn't help but think of him and my humble start. Thank you Shel, you are the man! ...still want to see him pull up to the house in his Jeep, come in for dinner and make him another apple pie.

Dear Judy

Good fortune shined on me over forty years ago when i first met Shel. He was a very smart, insightful, humorous man who taught me so much.

Thank you for all that you have done for him for so many years so that he could enjoy life a little longer. My thoughts are with you and the rest of the family.

My wife and I enjoyed a professional relationship with Shelly over a period of twenty years. He may have passed, but vivid memories live on.
It doesn't seem possible for him to be at rest, since he
always operated in overdrive, with a long list of things to do and the ever-present clipboard locked in the crook of his arm.

Shel was always selling. To him, it was a system a vital part of his DNA as the fearless Master of the Cold Call. His company's first brand name was in the plural, a team of talented communicators that he proudly built.

He always thought big. The office was World Headquarters. He built a network of offices across the country and courted prospects in Montreal, Toronto, Puerto Rico, across the street, wherever.

We can all reflect on these and other memories. God bless.

Dear Judy,
I don't have you tell you how special he was or how special you were to him.

He was my marketing mentor and taught me so much. I had a retailing background and he wanted me to join SBC to be the account executive for The Limited since I understood that business. I had no formal marketing training but he told me I only needed to be able to ask and explore all the answers to one question: "Why should targeted customers of the client want to buy their products/services or shop in their stores, beyond all competitors offerings?" This served me so well throughout my career.

I think I was the 9th employee at SBC and between Shel, Ed and Bill, it was truly was one big creative family, where all of us as individuals were encouraged to share ideas, grow, try new things, and in our passion to produce the best end-results, make mistakes. Nothing was impossible.

In this innovative, organic environment he created, I realized that he knew how to "live in the moment", nurture his open-mind and curiosity and others, and "unplug" from pain and past issues. A gift many of us struggle to achieve through out life.

We all went our separate ways over time but remained friends. He was a real gift in my life and will live forever in our memories of him. Sending love and wonderful memories,

Judy, so sorry to hear of Shelley's passing. He (and you) put up a good fight for many years. I've been reflecting on the fun times we had many years ago including a masquerade party at my house with Barb, Carol and Ron Castell attending.
I used to love his stories about some of the crazy clients he did ads for including, I believe, Herb Pfeiffer who was running for some local office and insisted on doing his own commercials despite Shelley trying to dissuade him. He was always on top of his game. Best wishes.

Judith, you have my sincere sympathy in the loss of your husband. You and I worked together at Shared Medical Systems when you and Shelly became engaged. I am happy to learn that you enjoyed many loving years together. I pray that God's continued grace and mercy, and many happy memories will sustain you in the days to come.

So sorry to hear of Shelly's passing. He was a kind and
gentle man and I enjoyed working for him at Shelly Berman Communicators. My condolences to his family and friends.

Shel was a fellow whose friendship was special. Amidst so many routine and more difficult transactions, his solutions were brilliant. He brought many skills and often glee to his choices. He was certainly a once-in-a-lifetime gift to those he knew. Such equanimity should be
a goal.

Shelley inspired me and my business partner MD Cohn in many ways. We learned how to treat employees and value their contributions. We learned how to manage a business for our clients best interests. And we learned how to be fair and honest in all of our dealings. My nearly 6 years at SBC taught me so much about business and friendship. My deepest condolences to his wife and family.
