June 14, 2007

We will miss Steve terribly. He was kind, and gentle with a contagious laugh and smile. A handsome friend from the early 70's who I loved to dance with. He was Mr. Disco. I remember the EBA days where the men had to have a certain look (handsome and a distinquish looking mustache) to be a member of their organization - Steve was the leader of the pack. We will miss you Steve, but you will always be in our hearts. After all, you left us with something - Love, frienship, and laughter. May you rest in peace. Love, Betty Howton

June 14, 2007

You have been such a good friend to me for so many years. Months would pass without our seeing each other, but we could always pick up where we left off. I will always remember your smile, your jokes, and that infectious laugh, especially when you saw my face after pulling me over for a speeding ticket. I couldn't wait to ask the officer why I had been pulled over, and it turned out to be just you pulling off another one of your jokes. There are so many memories my friend, and I wanted to add more. You left us too soon. I know that when I hear a wonderful laugh I will turn in that direction believing that you are still here. I know now that the angels are enjoying and appreciating "that" laugh--the one your friends have come to know and love. As a new angel, you have a new family of friends. Please keep the pranks to a minimum--no switching the robes around or hiding their shoes. What a gift you gave to us while you were here and I love you much. I will truly miss you. Your childhood friend before the mustache.

My condolences to the family. Steve and my family grew up together from the time he lived on Dartmouth Ave. through high school and beyond. As long as I have known Steve, he always had a smile on his face and kind words to say. He had a wonderfully sweet spirit and when our paths crossed we always managed to reminisce about our youth and our lifelong friends. My heart goes out his family for he will be missed by not only his family but by me as well. I pray that the Lord will lay hands on the family and provide strength, healing and guidance during this time of need. Steve is now at peace and in God's hands.

Steve always exemplified what a true gentleman should be. As a classmate at Fisk he was one of the most true example of what a self assured, likeable and ambitious student in the 70s should be. No man had a more handsome smile; no person had a more infectious laugh; no friend had a kinder heart. I've known Steve for 40 years and I've never seen him frown; I've never heard hm speak ill of anyone; I've never heard anyone speak ill of him. Before and after he was a Peace Officer, he was a man of peace; a man at peace --- even at peace with his illness when I last visited him in the hospital. Oh what a constant friend was he; truly a fun Dude; genuinely a NICE person. My mind is rich and replete with wonderful memories of him. I pray for God's continued comfort, grace & blessings for Marlaine, Trudi and Steve's entire family.

When I received the news of Steve's death, it literally nearly knocked me out of my chair. Steve and I were classmates at Fisk University. He was never less than charming, nice, understanding, a "little shy" and considered very handsome by the women at Fisk. Steve was always a good listener to my problems. I remember washing his "afro" often at Fisk. Sometimes he would show up with some of his "boys," and my roommate and I would wash their hair. THAT WAS BACK IN THE DAY! Steve, put in a good word for me to the MAN, or WOMAN, whatever case it may be. I will always think of you and our friendship.

It was with sadness that I found that 'Steve' had gone to Heaven. As a freshman student at Fisk, I remember his famous smile, the 'fro and his friendliness towards all of us young students. As a retired law enforcement officer myself, it's no puzzle that he was led to our profession because of his wonderful personality. May God Bless all of the family and friends during this time of bereavement.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with, and knowing, Steve for nearly 20 years. He was, as many others have mentioned, a true gentleman. When I think of him, I hear that infectious, unrestrained laugh, the one that had the capacity to make you think you’d made the wittiest comment Steve ever heard. He was gracious, thoughtful, intelligent, cultured, politically astute, and a friend. I will miss him
