Sylvia Shonkwiler Obituary

Shonkwiler Dr. Sylvia L. Shonkwiler, age 81, died peacefully Wednesday afternoon in her beloved Tequesta home surrounded by her family that loved her so dearly. A native of New Jersey where she graduated from St. Mary's School of Nursing as well as Fairliegh Dickenson University . Sylvia continued to break gender boundaries as the only female graduating from The Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in 1966, after which, serving as the first female podiatric medical intern at St. Luke's Hospital in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Upon completing her post graduate training she was named "Outstanding Woman of America" in 1967. She practiced as both a nurse practitioner and podiatrist in Central Ohio, residing in Westerville, Ohio and Hoover Woods, Genoa Township. Sylvia is survived by her husband Dr. R.J. Shonkwiler of Tequesta, FL; by her children, Dr. Walter S. Shonkwiler and wife, Kassidy of Garfield, N.J., Frances A. Hazlett and her husband, Jim of Greensboro, N.C., Tipton J. Shonkwiler and wife, Daniela of Jupiter, FL. Her pride and joy - eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren survive to carry her remarkable spirit. A brother, Dr. Stephen Conte; and sister, Joan Conte of Paramus, N.J. also survive her as well as 11 nephews and four nieces. She will also be greatly missed by her devoted caregiver, Sharon Fowler. Sylvia was a treasured personality and resource to all who loved her and will live on in their hearts. Donations may be made in her memory to Nationwide Children's Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 1681, Columbus, Ohio 43216-6810. Services Calling hours from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11 at TAYLOR MODEEN FUNERAL HOME, 250 Center St., Jupiter, FL (561-744-2030). I am so sorry for your loss. She was such a wonderful person. I loved working with her. She had a way of talking to the patients and making them feel "special". She will be greatly missed.
