Here is a copy of the wonderful eulogy delivered by George Grosz at my dad's funeral.
Thomas Craig Luffy, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and dear friend.
Good morning; my name is George Grosz. I have known Tom since 1952 and have shared many personal experiences with him over those 55 years. I am honored and privileged to be here today to share some thoughts with you on behalf of the Luffy family.
First of all, we would like to thank all of you for your prayers, your condolences, and gifts of your time during this tragic period. You all know that the emotional healing process takes time, so please continue to remember the family as the public part of Tom’s sudden passing ends and the private grieving process continues.
We want to recognize and thank Monsignor Hendricks, Sisters Joan and Pat, Deacons Don & Frank, Mary Fran Cassidy and the entire staff and community of St. Brigid of Kildare Parish who have gone out of their way to make this sad occasion somewhat easier for the family.
A very special thank you to the Sister’s of Divine Providence who suffered through twelve years with Tom & me at St. Basil’s School.
All of you knew Tom in one way or another, but besides Tom’s sisters Alvera, Sister Maura, Sister Marlene and sweet Marlene, his wife of 50 years, I have probably had the longest personal relationship with him and am proud to say that I consider Tom my dearest friend. No matter how far we were separated geographically over the years, Dorothy and I visited with Marlene and Tom on a regular basis, in many locations.
During the early years of our 55 year friendship, Tom, like all of us in that era, faced many challenges, and he worked hard to overcome them, lifting himself by his bootstraps – and was he ever successful! Even so, Tom always seemed to find the time and energy for volunteer projects from earth-day clean-ups, to coaching baseball and CYO basketball with his sons, to part-time maintenance man and janitor at the newly opened St. Brigid of Kildare School, to recently acting in the annual St. Brigid Theatre production. This year’s production was “You Can’t Take It With You”. How appropriate, as I think this title appropriately describes Tom.
Maybe because of his upbringing in Carrick, in the south hills of Pittsburgh, and the fact that as the youngest of 11 children (he probably had to more often than not – fend for himself), or the love and compassion that he saw his early widowed, saintly mother bring to the community, he lived a life full of compassion and caring for others.
While accomplishing much – working hard for several years at night school to earn his degree at Pitt and an outstanding 39 year career at Columbia Gas – he still found time to be a committed husband, father and grandfather. Tom was a great teacher who taught his children and grandchildren the importance of hard work, integrity, commitment and family values by his actions and mentoring. This is obvious by the successes that Tom, Marty, and Ron have achieved at relatively young ages. I could always see that his grandchildren absolutely loved and adored him.
Tom always took advantage of every opportunity to help others, even those outside of his direct influence.
We were blessed by his presence for 69 years and take comfort in that we will some day have the opportunity to join him again, sitting in his special chair, smoking a cigar (but not inhaling), sipping on a scotch (but not too much), rooting for his beloved Steelers and Buckeyes, or just quietly enjoying his grandchildren. For all of these things we are grateful. And by the way, hopefully there will be no e-mail available in heaven. As I’ve been told that is one thing some say will not be missed.
During these past few days, I’ve tried to find the one word that adequately describes Tom and while that might seem impossible, the best word that comes to mind is one that has been mentioned many, many times – “unbelievable”!
I think you will all agree that, maybe with the exception of his Saturday morning golf and his laptop computer, Tom was a very unselfish person. I’m not sure that Tom had ever seen the movie or read the book titled “Pay it Forward” or whether he would even agree with it, but it might be an appropriate title to sum him up.
So, having said all of that, thank you all for your compassion and as you live your lives, try to remember and celebrate Tom’s time with us by showing joyful love and compassion for all with whom you come in contact – or “Pay it Forward”. I’m positive that Tom would want us all to remember him in this way.
In closing, I would like to share a little story with you. We have a wonderful elderly priest living in retirement at our parish in Naples. Marlene probably knows who I mean. A few weeks ago in his homily he told us that he kept a special suitcase packed so that when our Lord called him for his final journey, he would be ready to go. Knowing Tom as a devout practicing Catholic I’m sure that he had his special suitcase packed for his final journey.
Farewell, Dear Friend!
Thank You
Julie Slusser/Bunch

We were very saddened and shocked to hear about Uncle Tom. He was a wonderful man. He and the rest of your family mean a lot to Ray and I, and his cigars at all family events will be missed. I suppose he will be cheering for "The Ohio State" up in heaven. Rose needed a friend up there also. Ray will be coming for the services, but the kids and I will be thinking of all of you.
