William Unger Obituary

UNGER, JR. William E. Unger, Jr., April 14, 1942 - January 1, 2013. After an 8-month struggle with bone marrow cancer, Bill Unger died peacefully on New Year's morning in the arms of his loving wife of 44 years, Pamela Millnitz Unger. Born and raised in Mt. Morris, IL, Bill graduated as a proud Mounder in 1960 and attended the Ohio State University on a football scholarship. Though sidelined early by a knee injury, Bill retained his scholarship and saw some action under the legendary Woody Hayes, as he chronicled in the Columbus Monthly article, "Hiding from Woody: Memoir of a Green Weenie." He received his BA, MA and Ph.D. in English from Ohio State, with a brief hiatus in Chicago where he worked for Encyclopaedia Brittanica and met Pam. An accomplished freelance author and editor, Bill founded the Acme Writing Company in 1984. He served as newsletter editor for the Olde Towne East Neighborhood Association, the community where he and Pam lived in a decaying mansion for 35 years, and for their current community, the Salem Area Civic Association. For the past 20 years he was the secretary/treasurer and newsletter editor for the North American Society of Pipe Collectors, building the membership to over 1000 and promoting a major pipe show in Columbus every August. He researched and published As Individual as a Thumbprint: The Custom-Bilt Pipe Story as well as editing 2 book-length collections of pipe-related writings for the NASPC Press: Mill River Smoke by Marc Dion and The Perfect Smoke by Fred Hanna. Bill's lifelong love of roots and rock music, beginning with Bob Dylan, was evidenced by his dedication to Zeppelin Productions concerts, particularly Tom Russell, to Shadowbox Cabaret performances, and to the new music venue, Natalie's. He remained an avid, eclectic reader up to the week of his death. He is survived by wife, Pam and their beloved dog, Stanley (plus five cats); mother, Vivian Hiscox Unger; brother, Greg (Roseann) Unger; sisters, Margaret (Bobby) Sydnor and Virginia (Roger) Corbitt; four nieces and two nephews. Gratitude is extended to his personal physician and friend Mary Beth Butcher, M.D.; oncologist Jerry Mitchell, M.D., and the Zangmeister Center staff; and the nurses at St. Ann's Infusion Center, all of whom provided so much more than medical care. Without the caring assistance of Mt. Carmel Hospice, a difficult time would have been unbearable. Gratitude also to Shirley McClain-Baldasare and Maren Schwital, the extraordinary naturopaths who kept hope alive. Memorials will continue at pipe events throughout the year, conducted by Bill's brotherhood of the briar. Donations in his name to the Democratic Party and/or the Natural Resources Defense Council would be appropriate and appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to DAY & MANOFSKY FUNERAL SERVICE.

In my 45 years of pipe collecting, Bill was one of the nicest guys I met. we had some great times at the Chicago shows. I was glad that my kletter to Tracey Mincer got him started on the Custombilt book. It turned out great. He will be ever so sorely missed.

Pam and family: So so sorry to hear about Bill's passing. Pam, you were his shining star, rock and excellent care giver. You fought for him till the very end. Bill will be missed.

We were sorry to learn of Bill's death. We met Bill soon after we founded Columbus Monthly in June, 1975, and he authored the cover story for the fourth issue, September, 1975. It was a funny, irreverent recollection about his time as a bench-warming football player for OSU and Coach Woody Hayes, titled "Hiding from Woody: Memoirs of a Green Weeny." We remember Bill as a witty and talented guy.

To: Pamela Millnitz Unger & Family

My condolences on Bill's passing. I remember him from when I was a “walk on” on The Ohio State University football team. Our next meeting was when I met you and Bill when I was selling widow Gastel Ebert's large “mansion” at 800 Franklin Avenue for $16,000, and catching hell for my advertising it as “another German Village.” Pam, you can be proud that you and Bill recognized the potential of the area and pioneered in what is now Olde Towne East. I often thought of you two and wondered how you were doing. I am certain that you made a good investment in the “decaying mansion” 35 years ago.

I fondly remember that Bill liked his pipe, which was a bit unusual for a young guy back then. You had many happy years together as the obituary implied, and I was happy to see that you stayed together in the old mansion for many of those years. I remember that Bill was an English major and was impressed to see that he got a masters and Ph.D. If there is anything I can do for you in your time of sorrow, please do not hesitate to ask.

Our hearts and prayers are with you Pam. He was a great neighbor.

I mourn with you the loss of a man I've come to know in the many years I've been lucky enough to be in the thoughts of Pam and Bill. I miss him terribly and open my heart to you, Pam. I am blessed to have spent some time back there over the glories of Thanksgiving and the remembrance of all things musical with someone that felt the holiness of music as I do. It was a time where he shined, and that light helps me a little more everyday.

Bill Unger was a fine human being and a kind editor, giving writers a chance to be published solely on their merits, not on the degree to which their names were known. He gave much more to the world than he took from it.
