George Banko Obituary
Born January 14, 1942 in Fairmont, WV to Czech immigrants, he was the son of the late Louis and Julia Banko.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Brenda (Hall) , daughter Valerie Millison and husband Troy; two grandchildren, Phillip (23) and Autumn (20); and his sister, Beverly Smith of Cockeysville, MD.
George was a graduate of Fairmont State College, earning a degree in Engineering Technologies, receiving an Outstanding Freshman Physics Award and becoming a lifetime member of Epsilon Pi Tau, an international technology honor society. He received a commission in the Air Force from the Officers Training School at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
He spent three years as a Minuteman Missile Officer and Industrial Engineer. Then he began a career in public education at the County Vocational Technical Center in Morgantown, WV. During this time he earned a Master's Degree in Education Administration from WVU. He became Assistant Director at the United Career and Technologies Center in Clarksburg, West Virginia. In 1975, he started working for the General Services Administration (GSA) in Washington, DC until retiring in 1996. He went back into education as substitute teacher for Frederick and Montgomery counties in Maryland.
In 2006, he was awarded the Golden Patriot Award from the graduating class of Governor Thomas Johnson High School.
The family would like to thank the entire staff in the memory care unit at Citizens Care and Rehab Center of Frederick.
At the request of the family, there will be no services. A private graveside ceremony will be held for the immediate family at a later date.
