James Williams Obituary

James Estle Williams, known fondly to all as Buddy, passed away peacefully at home on August 10, 2025, in New Albany, MS, at the age of 81. Born on October 9, 1943, in Tippah County, Buddy was a man of unwavering faith, boundless energy, and a heart that knew no end to giving.

Buddy was a cherished son to his late parents, Estle Arlander Williams and Alta Emily Cook Williams. His life was graced with love and laughter but also marked by the loss of his beloved daughter, Susan Leigh Williams, his adored grandchild, Landon Spradling, his dear sisters, Estene Alexander and Barbara Fortune, his brothers-in-law Roger Alexander and Gene Dowdy, his nephew Robert Love Jr., and two nieces Shannon Ellison and Sarita Levins.

Buddy's life was a testament to resilience and joy. His loving wife, Betty Dowdy Williams of 61 years,, was his steadfast companion and the love of his life. Together, they raised a family that includes a daughter, Erin Rachel Williams (Mark), and a son, Chad Matthew Williams (Leslie), who will forever cherish his memory. His sister, Betty Kelly(Jimmy), remains to honor her brother's legacy. Buddy's grandchildren, Colin Williams, Evan Williams, Logan Bradley, and Emersyn Lowrey, will always remember their grandfather's playful spirit and gentle guidance.

Buddy's commitment to his community was evident in his long and distinguished career as the Park Commissioner/Director in New Albany, where he served for over three decades. His work and vision were paramount in the design and construction of the New Albany Sports Plex (BNA Park). He believed in investing in the youth and families of his community, and this was his way of doing that. His ballpark employees were his extended family and children. His legacy in the parks of New Albany will live on as a reminder of his service.

Buddy was an avid hunter and found joy in sharing that with his son, grandchildren, nephews and many friends. Some of his fondest memories are of his time at deer camp with his boys. He was also a man of many jokes and one liners. He found great joy in making others laugh. He was a man of action and that's how he showed his love; not with words but acts of service.

A man of deep faith, Buddy was a life-long member of Glenfield Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Director, Sunday School teacher, AWANA Commander and a strong leader in the church. His Christian beliefs were the cornerstone of his existence, guiding his actions and interactions with all whom he met. Buddy's unwavering faith and his devotion to his church community were sources of comfort and strength to him and to those he served. He will be greatly missed.

Services to honor Buddy's life will be on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. with Bro. Kody Moore and Bro. Sammy Little officiating. A visitation will be on Friday, August 15, 2025, from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., both at United Funeral Service. Burial will be at Glenfield Memorial Gardens. My first encounter with Buddy was on the basketball court at Myrtle. As a ninth grader he was a starter on a Hoyt Woods team Myrtle Blackhawks team. Buddy just continued to be an outstanding athlete in baseball, football, and basketball throughout his high school and college years. Beyond that Buddy was a great brother-in-law. Always willing to help in any way needed. We all will miss him very much. Welcome home thy good and faithful servant.
