John Caruthers Obituary

He loved life and lived it to the fullest. He perfected the art of conversation to a religion. His joy overflowed to all who came in contact and knew him. Music gave him purpose and peace. John Miner Caruthers, after a long and fruitful life of 86 years, met his Creator and joined the heavenly choir from his residence at the Green Houses at United Methodist Senior Services in Tupelo on Dec. 23, 2022. John, known about Tupelo for his legendary means of transportation, his bicycle, was born in Memphis, Tn. on May 20, 1936 to the late Eugene T. Caruthers and Maxine Miner Caruthers. At a young age, he developed a love for music taught to him by his Step- mother Ginnie Caruthers, with whom he had a close relationship. John could rip a piano up!! He graduated high school from the longtime prominent Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tn. where he considered himself having the best Prepatory education in the land! John received his Bachelors Degree in Music from the University of Mississippi and later furthered his formal education with a Masters from Louisiana State University. A born educator and lifelong student of learning, John had a full career as an elementary music teacher in the Rhode Island Public Schools retiring after 30 years. John moved to Tupelo about 12 years ago where he became a regular at musical and artistic functions in the area. His love of music led him to sing in the choir and play piano/organ for Sunday school at Tupelo's First United Methodist Church and later, at West Jackson St. Baptist Church, where he found great joy in the music and worship ministry there. A big fan of American Family Radio John's zeal and zest for life, living, singing and making music and serving his creator will be his legacy.

A service celebrating his life will be held at 11 AM Thursday, December 29, 2022 from the Sanctuary of West Jackson St. Baptist Church with his pastor, Dr. Keith Cochran officiating. Private burial will follow in Longtown Cemetery in Crenshaw, Ms. next to his parents. Visitation will be from 10 AM-service time on Thursday only at the Church. Holland Funeral Directors-Tupelo is honored to be serving their friends.

John has no immediate family remaining but was close friends to his first cousins, the Oscar Evans family and other relatives, Bobby Scott, and family members, as well as his West Jackson St. Baptist Church family and many friends in Tupelo who loved him and enjoyed his wonderful personality and presence.

Memorials may be made to West Jackson St. Baptist Church, 1349 W. Jackson St., Tupelo, Ms. 38801, American Family Association 107 Park Gate Drive, Tupelo, MS 38801 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105

John was a very important friend to our family. His laughter was infectious and his enthusiasm for life was shared with joy. Never a phone call or visit ended without a joke, a thought about faith, a movie reference, a news story. We loved him and miss him so much. `Til we meet again, John.

I have ridden on the RI MS 150 bike fund raiser since it started back in 1988. In 1990 one rider in particular stood out amongst 600 riders. !!! and of course that was John Caruthers. Upon first glance, you assumed this fellow CANNOT be on this ride. It's a 2 day - 75 miles per day ride totaling 150 miles. And the route was extremely challenging......hilly all the way to New Hampshire. We did 5 states in two days! And yes this fellow was doing the ride signified by his MS bike number. Here we are riding our fancy lightweight bikes with racing wheels and tires, dressed in lycra and the most modern sweat wicking jerseys and aero helmets and streamlined clip on racing bike shoes. Well that wasn't John. He was dressed head to toe in regular street wear! Long sleeve plaid shirt with a yellow t-shirt over it for "visibility." Garden gloves, long khaki pants and suede casual shoes with regular socks with a US flag bandana draped around his neck ! And a photo plaque of 4 friends he was riding for probably friends with MS. Now his bike!!! A one speed red huffy type bike with full fenders, a speedometer, a bell and a small US flag on the handlebars !!! Most people wouldn't attempt to ride it 10 miles! Here's John doing 150 hilly miles.!!! You may ask how can I be so exacting about his appearance, well I have an 11X14 picture of this character hanging in my office since 2008 !!!!and of course with this great smile !!! Now back then he must have been 72 years old and I was 58. We spent an entire Saturday together riding 75 miles laughing, joking and singing along through beautiful country roads. In fact I couldn't believe I was doing this myself but John was that kind of fellow you just had to chat and say hello and admire him for his ability and stamina to ride a single speed bike in that outfit in that heat !!! He was amazing and he just kept on smiling and engaging you with conversation. My deepest respects to you John and what you have accomplished for the RI Multiple Sclerosis Society and the lasting impression you have made many the miles pedaling along chatting with friends. You are sorely missed. I believe the 2023 RI MS Ride the Rhode ride will be dedicated to you and ridden in your honor ! Godspeed.

I met John here in Pittsburgh while he was on a rollercoaster trip. We had been pen pals previously. He was so much fun to be with. John was a charter member of the American Coaster Enthusiasts, which has an International membership of over 5,000 members. He was a premier collector of Coaster postcards and memorabilia. We both served on the first Executive Committee of ACE in the late 1970s. He´s a wonderful friend who will never forget.
