George (Billy) Gantt
George William (Billy) Gantt, age 88, of Tifton, died Thursday, February 11, 2021 at his home surrounded by family.
Celebration of Life Services will be 11:00 am, Sat., February 13, 2021 at The Reflection Chapel. Eulogies will be given by David Gantt and Bill Fuqua III.
George was born October 22, 1932 in Dothan, AL to the late Joseph "Rush" and Myra Patterson Gantt. After high school he joined the United States Marine Corp and served 4 years. After his service he attended University of Auburn.
He joined the Georgia State Patrol as a Radio Operator at the Albany "Radio Post". He was promoted to trooper and transferred to the Tifton GA Post where he served for several years. He was promoted to Corporal again to the Albany Post and later became to the Post Commander as Sergeant. He retired from the Georgia Department of Safety "Peace Officers Safety and Training Council" at the Rank of Lieutenant.
He was a 32nd degree Mason of the SCOTTISH RITE OF FREEMASONRY; a former member of the Tifton Masonic Lodge, currently a member of the "Valley of Panama City" Panama City Beach, FL Lodge. He received his 50 year Certificate from "The GRAND Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Florida in January of 2017.
He was a member of the Shriners in Albany, GA and Panama City, FL and was a member of the Children's Transportation Team for several years and The American Legion.
He served as Deacon at First Baptist Church of Putney, Georgia.
He was currently a member of First Baptist Church of Chula, Georgia.
He was very fond and loving of his pets throughout his adult life.
Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Mangham Gantt, children, David Wayne Gantt of Fort Myers, FL (Sandra), Paula Gantt Carter of Jennings, FL,
Denise Gantt Fuqua of Panama City Beach, FL (Bill), Rhonda Gantt Boatwright of Lake Park GA, Roger C. Mangham of Wilsonville, AL (Mandi), Ches D Mangham of Sylvester, GA (Linda), 16 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, one sister, Mary Alice Hughes and many nieces and nephews.
He had a special relationship with Kellie Sheffield Barrett of Leesburg, GA (Jeff), who was a special friend of his children throughout his lifetime.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Hospice of Tift Area.
