Dr. JAMES ALLEN SMITH

James Allen Smith, II Dr. James Allen Smith, II, 69, of Birmingham, AL, passed away on December 20, 2012. Memorial services are scheduled for 3pm on Sunday, December 23, 2012, at South Highland Presbyterian Church, Birmingham, AL. Dr. Smith was born on August 7, 1943 in Dothan, Alabama. He lived on 360 Acres known as Pin Hook Farms during his youth. He graduated Valedictorian from Slocomb High School in 1961. His Father Dr. James Allen Smith, was a well known Baptist Minister and his mother Frankie Smith Whitt was a teacher. He attended Howard College and graduated from University of Alabama with a BS in 1965, MS.Ed, in 1968, and PH.D in 1972. He fell in love with and married the love of his life, Kay Owings in August, 1966. Dr. Smith was a teacher, planner, educator, administrator, singer, husband, father and grandfather who will be remembered by all he led and served. He taught Junior and Senior English at Tuscaloosa High School and Mountain Brook High School, served as Assistant Principal at Berry High School, Graduate Research Associate at The University of Alabama, Assistant to the Dean of the College of Education at Virginia Tech, Assistant Registrar/Admissions at Georgia Southern University, Senior Consultant at SDL Systems Research Group in Toronto, Canada, Grantsman, Associate Dean, and Assistant to the President for Administration and Planning at Lawson State Community College, and retired as Director of Business Affairs at Birmingham Southern College in 2002. Dr. Smith was a choirist in multiple church choirs and sang for several seasons with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra Chorus. His ministry in the church included a three-term Presbyterian Elder, taught junior high, senior high, and adult Sunday school classes and served as Senior High Youth Advisor. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Kay Owings Smith, sons Christopher Allen (Vivian) Smith of Birmingham, Shawn Thomas Smith (April) of Richmond, VA; and three grandchildren Kasey Frances Smith, Allison Claire Smith of Birmingham, and Mason Christopher Smith of Richmond; sister Suzanne (Paul) Wilson and nephew James Alex Wilson of Dothan, AL; and special cousin Sarah Anderson, Thomasville, AL.
