Mrs. Virdell B. Tigg, died Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at Noland Hospital. She was 60. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at Greater Zion Baptist Church (Cottonwood) with the Rev. Jimmy Coachman officiating. Burial will follow in Union Hill Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at Byrd Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. on Monday. Mrs. Tigg was born December 24, 1953 in Cottonwood and was a graduate of Cottonwood High School. She attended Alabama State University where she received her degree in elementary education. She then returned to Houston County and taught at Rehobeth Elementary School for 35 years prior to her retirement. Her favorite hobby was gardening and she loved to surround herself with beautiful and fragrant flowers. Mrs. Tigg was a member of Greater Zion Baptist Church in Cottonwood but she loved to visit other churches in the surrounding areas. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She is preceded in death by her parents, Drew Morris Baldwin and Luanna Jones Baldwin and a brother, Roy Carpenter. She is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, James Tigg of Dothan; a son, Kevin Tigg of Huntsville and a daughter, Tiffany (Demeria) Lightfoot of Troy; a grandson, Malcom Lightfoot of Troy; sisters, Icie Peterson and Eula May Haynes, both of Bridgeton, NJ, Annie Bell (Mike) Coachman of Cottonwood, Arentha (John) Kelly, Rethel (Timothy) Booker and Alisha Ash, all of Dothan; brothers, John Carpenter, Grady (Peggy) Carpenter, all of Jersey City, NJ and Sylvester Carpenter of Columbus, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and special friends also survive.
