Michael Parker Obituary

Michael Edward Parker died peacefully on Monday, Sept.16, after a sudden deterioration from Lewy Body Dementia.

Born June 5, 1947, in Canton, New York, he was the son of Robert Parker and Jean Parker. Beginning his college career at Brown University, Mike was snagged by the Army during the Vietnam War. After his service as Master Sargent at Hunter Army Airfield, he completed his degree in Philosophy at Miami University, where he met his wife Mary.

Classically trained in piano in his youth, Mike went on to play drums in many rock and roll bands, the highlight of which was opening for such legends as Janis Joplin in Providence, Rhode Island.

Next came golf. Mike learned to play at the age of six under the tutelage of his grandfather Wally, and the sport was his passion and great love for the remainder of his life. He played courses all over the world and was a scratch golfer for many years. He delighted in organizing the Wednesday game with his golfing buddies at Sakonnet Golf Club until his disease robbed him of the ability to gauge depth and distance. But nothing could stop him from enjoying his pizza, ginger beer, Italian subs and chocolate ice cream.

Mike began his career in publishing and media at Sports Illustrated, working in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York, before starting his own publishing company in Hartford, Conn., in 1987. He returned to New York and international publishing at AdWeek in 1996, rising to become President of the Marketing and Media Group at The Nielsen Company.

Mike leaves his wife Mary and daughter Amanda who, along with her partner Kati, already miss his ready smile and great wit.
The care given him at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach was extraordinary. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to support this amazing place so others can spend their final hours in the peace and comfort it provides.
