Barry Siders Obituary

Barry Lee Siders Jan. 29, 1943~May 8, 2009 Resident of San Ramon Barry passed away at the age of 66 after a yearlong battle with Pancreatic Cancer. This wonderful man was taken from us way too soon and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Barry was born in Michigan to Gertrude and Ellis Siders. He and his parents moved to the Bay Area when he was two. He graduated from Oakland HS, UC Berkeley and Hastings College of the Law. He was proud of his military career and retired as a Lt. Col in the US Army. During active duty he served in Korea, Germany and Vietnam. He practiced law in Danville from 1973-2008. Barry is survived by his wife who was the love of his life and best friend Claudia Conklin-Siders, his loving and devoted son Jonathan Siders, sweet daughter-in-law Natalia, Granddaughter Ella, stepsons Jeff Rodriguez and Greg Rodriguez, stepmother Maxine Siders and her children Bob and Nadine. He is also survived by Jonathan's mother Janice Siders. He is survived by a large and loving extended family to include the Siders, Conklin, Dieguez and Rodriguez families. He loved being called Uncle Barry by numerous nieces and nephews. He loved being a bonus Godfather to Debi and Ali. His friends are too numerous to mention. Their love for him never shined brighter than during the past year. He was known for his big bear hugs and always had a joke if someone had time to listen. He served as a Scoutmaster and soccer coach while Jonathan was growing up. He was happy with the choice of law as his career. His office manager, Vicki Lewis, meant the world to him. He was a member of the CA Bar and the Contra Costa Bar Association. He traveled the world and made friends wherever he went. He had a passion for life itself and lived his life to the fullest. His service will be at 2pm on Saturday, May 16, 2009, Wilson & Kratzer, 825 Hartz Way, Danville, CA 94526 (925-820-2999). To the VFW and VNVDV:
I want to thank you for everything you have done for our family since being made award of my husband's passing. He was very proud of his military service. Barry and I had the privilege of visiting both Lohne and Baumholder, Germany in late 2007. These are the two locations he was stationed in while in Germany in 1966-1968. In Lohne we were personally greeted and thanked by the mayor and two German Officers that Barry served with while in the US Army. In Baumholder Barry was the highest ranking officer staying on base so we were able to stay in the "Doll House" for several nights. We were able to visit with many young soldiers training on base. Barry and I planned to visit VietNam, but when cancer struck in spring 2008, this was no longer possible.

To my dear Barry - Your memorial service was everything you wanted complete with Military Honors of Taps (yes, LIVE-not a recording) the flag ceremony with presentation to both me and Jonathan while your buddy Bill Driscoll played Amazing Grace on his Bag Pipes. The Chapel was full of respect for you from Jon and all your family, friends, lawyers,judges,two of your best friends that served with you in Vietnam, son Greg was in dress uniform representing Concord PD as well as other CPD officers. There were fellow military personnel, active and retired,both in and out of uniform representing various branches of our military.
You were honored and should be proud.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars - Post #75 in Danville, California sends their deepest sympathy to the Siders Family. Barry was a longtime Danville attorney and well respected in the community serving in the Army Reserves. He was U. S. Army veteran who served in Korea and Germany - prior to sreving in-country in Viet Nam during the war. Barry retired as a LTC. from the USAR. The VFW salutes and honors Barry Siders service to his country and the community. From... the Officers and members of the VFW in Danville.

Many of us in the VietNam Veterans of Diablo Valley did not know or meet Barry Siders. Some of our members who lived in Danville knew him well through his active involvement with his family. We only wish - as fellow VietNam veterans he was a member and we had the opportunity to know him as we do our active members who through our organization serves the community & veteran causes.

We do know from his son, Jonathan his father was extremely proud of his military service in the Army - serving in VietNam in 1969 - remaining in the U.S. Army Reserves and reaching the rank of Lt. Col. before retirement. As fellow VietNam veterans - we honor and thank Barry for his years of proud service to his country... and his family and local community. The VNVDV membership sends their deepest condolences to the entire family... during this difficult time. May you always find comfort in knowing - as fellow military veterans... "we will always remember - and never forget." His memory will live on forever in the hearts and minds of fellow service members.

Dad, I love you with all of my heart and I will never forget you. You have touched so many lives and were such a great person, I know that your memory will live on in others. I will miss you being in my life but I hope that someday the pain of missing you is replaced by the great memories I have had with you.

Barry told me that after he found a fused hand grenade under the seat of his jeep in VietNam he lived each day as if it was to be one extra granted beyond his last had that wartime booby-trap gone off. In the words of General MacArthur, "Old soldiers never die, . . . " The Bear will be missed but not forgotten.
