This great Man was a neighbor to me when I was a kid. His Son was in my class and was a fellow cub scout. No matter how busy he was, Mr. Dan always had time for me. I remember one morning I was staying at his house, and had the honor of eating breakfast with him. I have never forgotten the advice he gave me, when I expressed an interest in politics.
Its been several years now since he left us, but his memory will remain with me always.

I know I am months late, however, I owe so much to Dan. Thanks tohis believing I could do it, I had some of the best times of my life working for hiim during his last city council, and ifrst state campaigns. His political smarts were supported by his beliefs in doing the right thing for others and his life was well lived. Thank you Dan....Sue Portwood

I was so fortunate to know him and work for his team in the Senate. He treated me like a son. I will miss him. To Barry and Tim, thanks for giving me the opportunity to know Dan. Teresa, I am feeling for you right now. My wife Patti is also fighting cancer and this is why I could not be there on Saturday...Dan would have told me to be with my wife. I will miss him so much.

I remember him from the First Presbyterian Church in Concord 1967-71. I was in the high school youth group and he and his first wife had our group over to their house a few times. He also came to Mission Springs youth retreat to talk to us. He was a very nice and smart man and he did a lot of good. Pat Jenkins Weisel, formerly of Concord, CA

To my Boatwright cousins, I am so very sorry for your loss. Your loss is shared by hundreds of thousands of grateful residents of California for Danny's many accomplishments and contributions resulting in improved transportation, education, health care, wine industry support, and so much more. Danny had such an amazing influence on everyone he met. My father, the staunch Republican that he was, worked on and supported his campaigns, encouraging others to vote for him over and over again. I was fortunate to have had several conversations with him over the phone where he described our ancestors arriving in the 1600's and later generations as provisioners in the Revolutionary War. I am able to be a member of D.A.R. due to his protection of our family's history and his encouraging me to join. What rich history we share and how proud all of his children must be of the legacy left by this wonderful, and most influential man. He was the rock of the Boatwright family, and of the State of California. Rest in peace dear cousin.
With love,

Teresa,
I'm so sorry for your loss. Please take comfort knowing your husband Dan is finally home with our Father God in Heaven.
I didn't know him personally but from what I've read, it seems as though he has accomplished his purpose in life and has made such great impact with many lives.
May God bless you and your family.
NO TEARS PAST THE GATE
Someone new has entered
our eternal home above.
The heavenly gate has opened wide
to welcome the one you love.
We cannot help the tears that fall-
our hearts need time to grieve
when earthly life has ended
and a loved one has to leave.
Yet even in the saddest time,
we know our Savior lives,
and we can trust completely
in the promise that he gives.
That in a glad reunion with the Lord,
our loved ones wait
to welcome us in joy
with no more tears
beyond the gate!

Senator Daniel E. Boatwright will be forever known and beloved by the California SIDS Community for his visionary Boatwright Bills of 1989, which transformed SIDS services, education, and research in California.
In the mid-1980's, 800 babies died per year from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) n California. Services to families of infants dying from SIDS were rudimentary. Public education was non-existent. Most families had never even heard of SIDS until their baby was found dead. First responders were unaware of SIDS. It was common for SIDS parents to be arrested at the scene of their baby's death, and led out of their home in handcuffs, often in front of their own children, neighbors, and friends. Despite the large number of SIDS deaths in California, little research was being performed to capitalize on this rich resource. Loosely organized Southern and Northern SIDS Advisory Councils attempted to improve this situation, but they had little power or influence, and the situation remained largely unchanged. These were, indeed, dark times.
In 1988, Kevin Brokaw, the infant son of Senator Boatwright's chief legislative aide, died from SIDS. Senator Boatwright quickly realized that little was known or being done about SIDS in California. Kevin's death energized this productive senator, who quickly brought SIDS to the attention of the State legislature. Senator Boatwright wrote, and ultimately passed, four key legislative bills. These laws provided increased funding for services to SIDS families; increased SIDS public education, especially to first responders; established a California SIDS Advisory Council; and established a uniform autopsy and death scene investigation protocol to improve the accuracy of the diagnosis of SIDS and to stimulate research. These laws propelled California's SIDS services, education, and research to a level that would not have been possible without them. Senator Boatwright's legacy to the SIDS community lives on in these pioneering and profoundly visionary laws.
The SIDS scene in California is now very different because of Senator Boatwright. The general public is aware of SIDS, as well as a number of changes parents can make in their infant's sleep environment to reduce the risk of SIDS occurring. First responders know about SIDS, and they are usually appropriately gentle, supportive, and knowledgeable when arriving on the scene of a SIDS death. California has made monumental contributions to SIDS research, because the Boatwright Bills stimulate research. And the California SIDS Program now leads the nation in providing SIDS services and education, and in supporting SIDS research. All of these advances are due to the actions of one productive California Senator, Daniel E. Boatwright.
Since 1991, the California SIDS Community keeps Senator Boatwright's memory alive when it established the Senator Daniel E. Boatwright Award, “for extraordinary public service on behalf of Californians touched by sudden infant death syndrome.” It is appropriate that Senator Boatwright was the first recipient of this, the most prestigious and important public service award given annually by the California SIDS Community. By the end of 2011, a total of 20 individuals have been honored with this award: including SIDS parents who pioneered SIDS peer support, public health nurses who created paradigms for supporting SIDS families and advanced public education, and SIDS researchers who strive to end this tragedy.
These advances are Senator Boatwright's living legacy to the California SIDS Community. Anything we have achieved and any advances we have made are due to the vision of Senator Daniel E. Boatwright over 20-years ago. To the family and friends of Senator Daniel E. Boatwright, the California SIDS Community extends our deepest sympathy and our most profound gratitude.

Chair, California SIDS Advisory Council

Every time I drive by that state college we now have in Concord I think of Senator Boatwright. There would have been no college without his efforts, it's extrodinarily tough to get a Governor to sign on to a project like that - but Senator Boatwright got it done. He was smart, tough - respected by everybody, one of the best legislators I ever saw. He did so many wonderful things for his constituents, self-less stuff. He will be long remembered. My condolences to the Boatwright family.
