David Speck Obituary

David A. Speck Resident of Concord David A. Speck, age 82, passed away on December 7, 2008 at his home in Concord following a brief battle with cancer. David was born May 4, 1926 in England, the elder son of Alexander and Norah Speck. He attended Pocklington grammar School in the town of Pocklington, Yorkshire, England. During World War II, David served as a paratrooper in the British Army. In 1948, David came to the United States and in 1954 he became an American citizen. He lived in Augusta, Maine where he met his wife of 53 years, Mildred (Millie). In 1962 he moved, with his family, to Concord where he had resided ever since. David worked eight years for the J. C. Penny Company in Maine and in Concord. For 25 years he was a member of the Bakery Drivers Local 432 and worked for various companies in the East Bay. After retirement in 1988, David became very involved with the Pleasant Hill Senior Center. He performed volunteer work, traveled with the club's excellent trip program, and worked as a part-time custodian. He was also a member of the Concord senior Club. David enjoyed worshiping at his church, the First Presbyterian Church of Concord. He was also a member of the Mt. Diablo Lodge #48 F & AM. He loved working in his yard, taking great pride in growing an ever-increasing variety of flowers and having blooms year around. He truly loved God and nature and the people he interacted with every day. David is survived by his loving wife, Mildred, of Concord; his daughter Cheri and her husband, Gerard Borromeo of Mill Valley; his son, Andrew Speck of Santa Barbara and his younger brother, Peter Speck, of Alaska. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Concord, 1965 Colfax St. (corner of Salvio & Colfax) in Concord on Wednesday, December 17, at 11;00 AM. Donations may be made to the Pleasant Hill Senior Center Building Fund or to the First Presbyterian Church of Concord.

My prayers go out to Millie and her family. She is a wonderful lady to work with. I met her husband, David, a couple of times. He was a good man and liked by everyone. He sure kept the seniors at the senior center in mind with his pies.

I was always pleased to share life experiences with David. He was quite the gentleman. I wish I had been able to share more with David, but will settle for the few Breakfasts events since retirement. Millie found a winner in David and she will always be held in my heart. Our deepest sympathy for David's wife Millie and his family.

Deatr Millie and family,
Ken and I were saddened to hear about the loss of David. I always remember his smile and kindness. I remember that he always had your car warmed up and out of the garage for you every day when you went to work.
It was fun sharing a breakfast w/ you and your family in Lake Tahoe a few years ago.

You are in our hearts and prayers.
