Joe and I were on the RUHS football team back in 1936. His wife Emily and I were classmates. I hadn't seen Joe since our football team held its 50th reunion about 26 years ago and I had lost track of his whereabouts. I send my sympathy and best wishes to Emily and family and want them to know I share their loss.I will remember the friendshp we shared so many years ago. Ed Johannessen

Ooach Joe Vargas was loved and respected by his sophomore football team at ECHS in 1965. I particularly appreciate that he'd take us on a quiet, inspirational tour of the campus after practice on the day preceding a game. I'm not sure that today's students would respond to something so traditional and sentimental, but it did help cultivate our respect for the school, helped establish our identities as students, athletes and a team, and concentrate on the next day's mission.

The nature of things in that era were such that we eventually learned that Mr. Vargas could kick the ball through the goal posts from the sidelines, just one yard east of the line defined by the uprights . . . . but knew nothing more about his career as a player, and would not have dared to look into it.

It's regretable that such interesting things about people we've known and admired for years aren't revealed to us until after their death, and that by the time many students think to contact their former teachers to thank them . . . it's too late.
