In Loving Memory
José Nunes Lopes Neto
December 12, 1936 - January 11, 2021
José Nunes Lopes Neto passed away in his home 1/11/2021 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife Zeca, his daughters Paula and Marizé, his grandsons Arric, Justin, Jared and Josh, his sisters Dos Anjos(Manuel) and Aurora, and his brother Paulo (Luisa).
He was born and raised in Ílhavo, Portugal. As a young boy he began working at his father's bakery and continued until he joined the Portuguese Army. Upon his return he met and married his wife Maria Jose (Zeca) Corujo in 1964 and soon after went to France to find work. After 9 months away, he was reunited with his wife and continued his work with his father at the bakery. In 1969 he and Zeca chose to immigrate to the United States and begin a life in California. José, Zeca, Paula and Marizé became United States' citizens in 1976 and he was very proud of that. He worked at various jobs until his retirement when he turned 65.
José was a super fan of Futebol (Soccer), and regularly listened, watched and kept up with the teams around the world his entire life. You could also find José and Zeca participating in the Portuguese Festas celebrated at Portuguese Halls and dancing the night away at these and New Year's events surrounded by their beloved native music.
A great joy in his life, beyond his family, was making bread and roasting pigs for friends and family. No matter the occasion, or gathering, his delicious bread was always at the table, warm and ready for all. His Easter bread was beloved by everyone, especially because it only came out once a year, and was a project both he and Zeca enjoyed executing together.
We will miss his quiet, gentle and dependable manner. The man he was to each of us, no matter family or friend, was a person that was available to all, unafraid to learn new things, courageous in his actions and striving to always make his life, quiet, yet respectful and giving to everyone around him.
We love this man, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend. May his memory be a comfort to all and his actions be a reason for us to all push the envelope and make decisions that will benefit ourselves and the generations to come. May God bless everyone that has crossed paths with José (Zé) Neto and remember him as he would like. Strong, honest, full of integrity and love for those around him.
