Louis Pasquinelli Obituary

03/26/1917 - 04/27/2008 Resident of Manteca, CA Louis Pasquinelli passed away peacefully Sunday, April 27, 2008 in Manteca, California, where his parents Francisco and Vittoria Pasquinelli from Italy had settled to raise their family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Marie, children Linda, Vance, Barbara, Vittoria, Leslie, Cecile, step-daughter Nicole, his sister Sylvia Checchi, brothers-in-law Joseph and Robert Attubato, nephews Bruce Checchi, Edward and Joey Attubato, nieces Cheryl Dowd and Karen Graf, his sons-in-law Doug, Russ, Jay, Adrian and Craig, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. His sister Billie Thull preceded him in death. Lou proudly served in WWII on a destroyer in the South Pacific theater. While on board, he enjoyed making ice cream for the troops hoping to make their day a little brighter. That was his generous nature. Lou was best known for his restaurant "Bertolas" at 46th and Telegraph in Oakland. At the young age of 19 he bought the restaurant and offered wonderful Italian dinners to customers for over 50 years. Where else could you get 50-cent well drinks? He then moved the dinner house to San Pablo under the name of Louie Bertolas until he sold the restaurant to retire. Lou had many interests. His love for travel sought him and Marie many adventures throughout the world. Being from the Bay Area, he loved sports, especially baseball and football - always a fan of the Raiders, Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants, and yes, the Boston Red Sox. Lou loved his cats - Gigi, Luigi, Angelina and all of his other gatti throughout the years. His passion for cooking gave all of his family and friends meals to feast upon - Mangiamo!!! The family would like to express its deepest gratitude to Dr. Wolf and his staff in Manteca for their wonderful support and help with Lou over the years. There will be a service for Lou at Deegan Ripon Memorial Chapel in Ripon on May 14, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that donations be made in his honor to Hospice of San Joaquin, 3888 Pacific Ave., Stockton, CA 95204 We love and miss youyour smile will never be forgotten.

To all of Louis family my heartfelt condolences. Louie gave me my first job almost forty years ago at the original Bertolas. Today I try to keep the Bertolas tradition alive as the head cook and manager at Macs Old House Restaurant in Antioch for almost 25 years. Doing things the way Louie taught me, never cheating the customer, using fresh quality ingrediants and working on volume. Marie I can still remember the day you taught me how to bus tables clean one set one. To his children I don"t know if you remember me at one time or another I think I met all of you Your father was and is the greatest he led me into a profession that has given back more than I have put in. Friday night when I am behind the grill cooking a little bit of Louie's heart and soul will go into every meal I cook, as it always has and always will because I know he is always looking over my shoulder Louie thanks for giving that 15 year old slow fat boy a chance to prove he could do it. Sorry I didn't get a chance to say goodbye I miss you Chief. Your employee, your co-worker and your friend. Richie

Just a note to say thanks. Not because I had tons of memories of bouncing on Grandpa's knee, or taking walks in the park. Grandpa was Grandpa....busy, traveling and living his life. But, the joy he brought into my Mom, Linda's, life will be the thing I will forever remember about him. During a childhood that may not have been the best, he provided the patches of stability that every child craves. The acceptance Mom needed and the affection she deserved. I will forever be grateful for the love he provided to all of the family and all the great stories of years ago when Bertola's was "the" place to hang. Years later, while working at AT&T I befriended some long time Oakland residents who not only remembered Bertola's but claimed it was the only Italian restaurant they would eat at. He touched many with his kindness, his generosity and certainly his cooking. Don't worry Grandpa...I memorized your sauce recipe! Lots of love...

To my sweet wonderful dad, Eluigi

I thank God everyday for him giving me to you as your daughter. I will so miss our talks and laughter. You will always be in my heart and as we promised, if your loving wife Marie ever "needs", we will all be there to help. We would not have had you so long if it wasn’t for her you are much loved by all. I love you dad! So long for now your loving daughter Tori-ador

Grandpa,

I am writing to YOU in this Guest Book because I know you can read it from above. I want to apologize for not coming around more often; life always got in my way. On the Saturday before your passing, Mom told me that you may not make it through the weekend but I had so many things to do and I wrestled with the idea of coming to see you. I became overwhelmed with grief and anxiety. I thought about all the times I went to your house; especially the time when Marie and I saw the possum in your backyard; UGLIEST, cutest thing in the world! I still laugh when I think of Marie's face!

I ended up going to see you in the Hospital on Saturday, your eyes were open, you drank water and you said a few words for mom. I rubbed your head and told you that I loved you.

Sunday morning when I received the voice mail from mom letting me know that you passed away, I cried. I did not cry that you passed away because I knew you were going to be in good hands. I cried because I was so thankful that I was able to see my grandpa one last time while he was alive.

I would never forgive myself if I did not go see you. I love you grandpa...

Marie,
My thoughts and prayers are with you. I know it's been years over (35) since we worked together in DA in San Leandro and you may not remember me, but I think of you often and was so sorry to hear about Lou. He was one in a million. I still remember your beautiful red convertible, a Valentine gift to you from him if I remember correctly. It's funny, I was just thinking over this past weekend that I wanted to check in and see how I might contact you. I'm sorry it's under such sorrowful circumstances.

I first met Lou at the restaurant in San Pablo. I came over to pick up some kegs of beer that he was supplying for my wedding to his daughter Leslie. As I was rolling the kegger out the door he promptly stopped me and had one of his hired workers lift the kegs for me. He said his concern was for my back on my wedding day. I thought it was really cool to have a future father-in-law to have a concern for me and a sense of humor.
Thirty-two years later I'm still married to his daughter and still remember that like it was yesterday. I have nothing but plesant memories of Lou. Always a sports fan but the many conversations we had about the Oakland A's were always a hit at family outings. Even though his kids are all big talkers Lou would always seek me out and talk about baseball. So much so that one of his daughters left the family get together, went outside, then rang the doorbell, and when he answered she told him that this was the only way that she could talk to him. Three minutes later we were talking baseball again. Thanks Lou for the great friendship, conversations, support, and good memories through the last thirty-two years. Miss ya, man.

Lou had a great, full life and helped me have a taste myself because of him. I confess, I'm older now and don't remember his face clearly. Wish someone would post a picture. I was privilaged to live in huge apartment right above the restaurant. Friends Dave, Gary and Pat lived there too. We had our own bar but Lou's was better of course. Wonderful meals at restaurant. We'd go in back door leading to kitchen and get probably the only 'to go' meals ever offered. Pat (had the adjoining apartment with ours) got a cook's job there! No small feat! He learned the secret recipe for cooking swiss chard; I'd give a thousand bucks to have some. Never found another as good, even at Vanessi's in SF. I really miss the HUGE dinner plate I carried with me for years. Big enough to put a small turkey on. Must've weighed 5+ pounds. Off white with gray-black rim. Unfortunately mine broke and life was grim for quite awhile. I'm sorry Lou! Thanks for rich years back when I was young fan, patron.

I first met Lou at Bertola's on Shattuck in 1963, I was 19 years old at the time and some of my friends introduced my to that great place. A few even worked there. I'll never forget the look on Lou's face when I asked him to buy me a drink. He asked me why he should and I told him since it was my 21st Birthday, it would be my first legal drink!

I know Lou will continue to make people happy where he is now. Lou, thanks for being an unforgettable part of my formative adulthood.

We used to hang out at 'TOLAS as we called it. Hung out with Pat and Mike Yarnold. Dave Wescott, also. Remember the great soup and the nice meals. I had my first 21 year old drink at Bertolas. Great memories. My condolences.
