Marian Jostes Obituary

Marian (Judy) Jostes 1914 ~ 2010 Resident of Santa Barbara On June 10, 2010, Judy Jostes passed away peacefully during an after-dinner-nap. As a Berkeley native she was so enthralled with life, she insisted that the family move from Washington DC, where her husband Charlie worked for the Federal Land Bank, back to settle in the San Francisco Bay Area because she didn't want to lose three hours of life to a change in time zones. Judy was an avid golfer, playing regularly, and scoring a hole in one. She was also an accomplished potter and seascape artist. She studied with Bennett Bradbury, E. John Robinson, and Joseph Bennett, her mentor. She became a member of the Society of Western Artists, and the Mendocino Art Association and created a legacy of over 450 paintings. Her paintings were shown in Carmel, San Francisco and Mendocino as well as being featured in numerous shows throughout the Bay Area. Judy loved to fish. Throughout her eighties, she regularly traveled across the Bay from her home in Walnut Creek to the Fort Mason piers, to fish for crab with her close friend George Heuer until she was nearly ninety. She spent her last several years living in Santa Barbara to be close to her only son John. She continued her trips to the beach and ocean and wore a smile to the end. She is survived by her son John and daughter-in-law Karen as well as many nieces and nephews. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends and neighbors. Memorial services will be held at a later date in both Santa Barbara and Walnut Creek. In lieu of flowers we know Judy, a fervent animal lover, would appreciate a donation to the animal charity of your choice.
