Martin Steiner Obituary

Martin Henry Steiner Aug. 19, 1949 - Nov. 8, 2011 Former resident of Oakland Marty died November 8, 2011, after a 9 year battle with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the son of Ruth & Paul Steiner, the family moved to California before his first birthday, where he grew up in Oakland and Piedmont. He attended Glenview Elementary School, McChesney Junior High, Menlo School, and graduated from Oakland High School in 1967. Marty earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley; and a Master's in International Affairs from American University, Washington, DC. He was a Diplomat with the U.S. Foreign Service for the last 20 years, serving proudly in Mexico City, Havana, Taipei, Guangzhou, Vienna, Washington, and Juarez. Even while living overseas, Marty felt a special connection to the East Bay and read the Oakland Tribune daily on line. A huge fan of the Oakland Raiders since their inception, Marty attended games when at home between assignments, and followed them from afar when living away. He loved the Lair of the Bear Cal Alumni Family Camp in Pinecrest, and spent joy filled weeks at Camp Gold in his youth and Camp Oski as an adult. He is survived by his wife Lourdes, and sisters Erika, Maureen & Annette, who give special thanks to his devoted friends Steve Cornell and Christy Simpson. A memorial gathering will be held in the Spring in Marty's beloved Montclair Park. Remembrances may be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or Hope Hospice in Dublin.

Continued prayers and heartfelt condolences to Martin's family and friends. We were in the same FS oral exam group, the only two who passed, and we attended Foreign Service Officer training together. He was a great guy, with a wonderful sense of humor.

Martin was a dear friend, roomate, and dorm buddy of mine from American University. I was a brash young 20 something and he was already a grown person but somehow we got along great. We had lots of fun hanging out at the Davenport Lounge at American University, sitting around our hot stinky apartment off Wisconsin Ave. Me dragging him off to a night club called the 5th Column. He would always share the Pete's Coffee his sister would send him and I would share my home made potstickers. We'd spend hours debating anything and everything. Sometimes we agreed and sometimes we disagreed but we always stayed friends. Years later, we would catchup when he was in town and get coffee, lunch or dinner and talk about friends from school or what we were up to. He was always cheerful and happy to see his friends. Always a gentleman.

When I started my family and settled down he came to visit when he was state side. In his last visit, he told me he was ill but he never told me how ill he was. But now that I think back, he came to say goodbye in that Martin kind of way. He didn't want to worry me and all I could do was say words of encouragement not know how serious it was.

I sent emails but never heard back but I always thought he was busy in Mexico or wherever he was in this world. I'll miss him. I'll miss him alot.

I continue to keep Martin and his family in my prayers. Hard to believe that so much time has gone by. I am now retire from the Foreign Service, but still remember our first day together as Martin and I faced the beginning of our Foreign Service orientation class. May he rest in eternal peace. I am so sorry to learn of Marty's death. I was just thinking about him today, and decided to look him up. I was one of Marty's roommates in Madrid in 1976. I will always remember how funny Marty was, and the fact that he had no idea of how funny he was. He was kind and thoughtful and very bright! We had wonderful arguments and great meals together. I share in your loss and will always remember Marty as a young man in Madrid who insisted on ordering in English at Burger King! May his memory be a blessing to his family. I am so very sorry to hear of Martin's passing. He and I took the Foreign Service Oral Examination together, and we were the lucky two who passed it that day. Martin and I were then in the Foreign Service Orientation Class together, where his good nature, wonderful sense of humor, and intelligence made a lasting impression. Our prayers and thoughts go out to Martin's family. Steve and Ute Hubler

My heartfelt condolences to Martin's family and wife Lourdes, who was part of our "Consular Section" at U.S. Embassy Mexico City. Martin's humor, sharp mind and upbeat demeanor kept our daily workplace enjoyable when he served in the American Citizen Services Unit with me at the Embassy. He was helpful and cordial with our customers - even the most demanding, difficult ones! I was pleased to have attended his wedding in Mexico City and to have followed up during subsequent years when our paths crossed - though not often enough. My thoughts are with you and with Martin.

Marty was a good friend of Mark Johnson- a life long friend. He will be greatly missed by myself, Kathy Johnson. I will always miss his funny sarcasm and how he could get your adrenal rushing in a heartbeat. I also know he had a huge tenderness behind the facade. Sorry he had to suffer for so long. Please contact Mark and I for the memorial.

It is with much sadness that I hear about Marty. I knew him through grammar school, Jr. High and High School and remember him fondly as we shared classes through our childhood. My regards to his family, I know he will be missed.
