Matthew Butler Obituary

Matthew Scott Butler Sept. 23, 1988 - Sept. 17, 2007 Resident of Martinez Matthew entered into his heavenly rest on September 17th. He was born in Walnut Creek, was a lifelong Martinez resident and a true blue bulldog. Matthew was an exceptional athlete, competing in baseball, basketball and football throughout his youth and high school years. Matthew found his greatest freedom and comfort competing on the athletic field. He attended Laney Junior College and was a quarterback on the football team this fall. Matthew loved relating to and working with younger children whether coaching them to develop athletically or teaching them to grow spiritually as a Creekside Champions children's leader. Matthew was beloved by friends and family who will miss his great smile and the spark he brought to everyone's life. He is survived by his father, Todd; mother, Trina; brother, Phillip; and grandparents, Billy & Norma Lee Butler; Nana Irene and Grandpa Butch Cardinale. Matthew was blessed with a large family of uncles, aunts, and cousins. Visitation will be held at Creekside Church, 444 Fig Tree Lane in Martinez on Thursday, September 20 from 5-8 p.m. A Celebration of Life service for Matthew will be held Friday, September 21 at 3 p.m. also at Creekside Church. Family requests that any donations be given to Creekside Church for the establishment of a Matthew S. Butler scholarship fund. Graham-Hitch Mortuary (925) 846-5624

Hey, hallway buddy, my soda sharing friend ... you saved my life that day in math class... I hate that I moved away. Your in my thoughts often, even now being old and having teens of my own. I miss you man. I talk to you often even now... miss your face babe.

Wow! A year passes and I still can’t help to think about you everyday. I had to get thru yesterday before I could calm myself enough to write to you. Allison, Chase, Cierra and I are all doing pretty good it’s Cody I sometimes worry about, but I’ve come to realize you are always close to him. He wears the dog-tags everyday and he didn’t tell me about losing them last week until yesterday at dinner. He received a phone call from another student at school who had found them. I asked him if he new the kid that found them and he said kinda but not really. So how did he know they were yours? Cody answered ‘I don’t know he just did.’ That’s when it hit me…I need to be thanking you for getting those back to Cody. “Thank you little Cuz” You mean so much to him and he carries you in his heart everyday. We all miss so much and count the days until we see you again.

PS. I’d say hi to your mom and dad but I will see them this Sunday. YE HA!!!!

Well, guess what? Today is 1year. And it has been the hardest year, not only for me but for everyone that lost you. Now I know how hard it is to loose a friend, not only a friend but one of my best friends. Me and you have been friends since 1st grade, and even when I moved schools we were still friends. Now, I lost my friend but will be with him again. You were the one that always made everyone friends again becaues you hated when we were made at everyone, you were the one that always put a smile on our faces. Do you remember our group of friends? I do. I miss those days! Well I know that I dont have a lot to say on here because well I talk to you pretty much everyday. I miss you and Love you Matt! Ill be with you someday!

Dear Tood and Trina,
I know this was the hardest time in your life, but I want you to know that you raised an amazing son! I miss you guys and hope to see you soon!

To the Butler Family,

In remembrance of Matt, I wanted you to know I think of him often; he profoundly impacted my life in many ways, as I'm sure he did with others. He is always in my heart.

I wish you all peace, love, and open communication in your family - always.

Matthew
I have not added an entry to this book as I feel you already know how I feel. I have told you almost daily, but for the record and for others to know how much I appreciate their words and condolences to us I have felt the need now to do so.
We miss Matthew so very much and It doesn't go away. We know he is in the presence of God and is happy and content, it is we here behind that have to endure the loss.
You are so loved Matthew, and you know that. We will see you soon, sweetheart.

Words cannot express the feelings I have for you or the experiences we have shared together. I miss you more than anything and wish things were different. Just know that first loves never die.

Butler Family,
There isn't a day that goes by that my thoughts are not with you. I hope you are doing well and know that you have a permanent place in my heart and always will.

Todd, Trina and Phillip,
I only met your family once at the Todd reunion in Arroyo Grand in 1989. I heard about Matthew a few months ago from my Aunt Marsha. I want you to know that there is not a week that goes by that I do not pray for the Lord to comfort you. When I read the wonderful stories about Matthew and how he lived his life, I found that he had so much in common with my children. Sports, Faith in God, and you have been placed on my heart to pray for you.

Oh Matthew,
Six months has gone by and it all still seems so unreal. It is hard to go to Martinez now knowing you will not be there. I know you know how very much I miss you and that wonderful smile of yours. Tears still fall even though I know your in a better place. My love for you will never go away and all our times we spent together talking, joking and laughing will never be forgotten.
love you
miss you

I'm a childhood friend of Aunt Leslie's from when we all lived in Ventura, Calif.

There are lots of awful things that happen in this world, but losing your child has to be one of the absolute worst. I pray for strength and peace of mind for your family.

It sounds like there were lots and lots of people who thought very highly of Matthew, you did a great job raising him for that to happen. My son has been an athlete, too, and when I've been told "you must be so proud of him" when he did well at sports, I've always told that nice person I'm happy he's enjoying what he's doing, but I'm proud of the great guy he is and how well he treats others. I'm sure you are proud of Matthew for the same reason.

Keep all the kindnesses you've been shown in the last month and use them to ease the tenderness of your hearts. All the kindness and respect you've been shown is just repayment for all that Matthew's done for them.

May God bless him and you all. Debbi (McCown) Miner

Todd, Trina, Phillip, Bill & Norma,

My heart just sank when I heard of the loss of Matthew. Although I didn't know your son & grandson, I can only imagine he was as genuine as I've always known his parents and grandparents to be. Reading entries from others makes me reflect on growing up with Matthew's dad and what great times we had. That infectious smile must have carried on from generation to generation. Rest knowing that the Lord will comfort you in these first days and that all the wonderful memories that have been engraved on peoples lives are because of the blessing your son bestowed upon others.

Blessings to you all....Wendy :)

To the Butler Family,

I am so sorry for your loss. Matt was a student in my public speaking class this year at Laney and I adored him.

In a teacher's career, we come across a lot of students, some more memorable than others - Matt was definitely memorable.

In the short time I got to know him, I realized he was a great kid and a great student with a quiet and giving spirit.

It is this world's great loss that Matt is no longer in it. It is always hardest for those of us left behind but I hope he has truly found the peace he was looking for.

Although, I know you don't know me, if there's anything I can do for you, please don't hesitate to contact me - I have a class photo with Matt if you would like me to send it to you.

I wish you all the comfort during this difficult time.

With respect,
Cat Brewer

I will always love and miss you and you will always be in my thoughts and prayers. I'm glad that our last words to each other were "I love you." I always had a special place in my heart for you ... may you rest in peace ... until we meet again in the heavenly presence of our Lord.
