Steven Avon Obituary

Steven W. Avon, M.D.
March 9, 1956 - February 9, 2019
Resident of Danville, CA
It is with great sadness that we announce that Steven Avon lost his courageous and dignified battle with ALS at the age of 62. A truly devoted husband, father, son, brother, friend, colleague, and respected hand surgeon, Steve had a twinkle in his eye, a contagious smile, and a love of chocolate dwarfed only by his love for his family. All who knew him are blessed by his memory.
Steve grew up in Fremont, CA where he graduated from Washington High School. He attended UC Davis and McGill University Medical School followed by the St. Mary's SF Orthopedic Residency Training program and the USC affiliated Boyes Hand Fellowship. In 1990, he began his medical career with the Fremont Orthopedic Medical Group. He joined Kaiser Permanente in 2002, retiring in 2016 after being diagnosed with ALS. He was very dedicated to his patients and they in turn loved him.
Steve was very active, enjoying hiking; riding his bike to work and on century rides; tending his garden, including over 40 blueberry plants; reading; swimming; tennis and stamp collecting. He was an avid traveler, continuing in his wheelchair when he could no longer walk.
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Shauna; children, Allison Gibson (Jeff) and Daniel; his mother, Ruth; his brothers, Rob (Cathy) and Mark (Kim); his many nieces and nephews; and his faithful dog, Bailey. He is preceded in death by his father, Henry. Gone much too soon; he will truly be missed.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to his extended family, many friends, and colleagues for their love and support during his tragic illness. The family also would like to thank the ALS Association, Kaiser's ALS Clinic, and Homecare Assistance for their wonderful care.
A service will be held at the San Ramon Community Center Fountain Room at 12501 Alcosta Blvd on March 24th at 2pm. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, the family warmly suggests donations on Steve's behalf to the ALS Association Golden West Chapter PO Box 565, Agoura Hills, CA 91376.

Doctor Avon was my Physician and friend. He saved my hands. I was not aware of his passing and will pray for him until we laugh again together ...

I was so sorry to read of Dr. Avon's passing. I did not know that he was ill. He was my doctor for three surgeries while with Fremont Ortho Group. I remember how kind he was and I always had great confidence in his ability as a surgeon. He was charming and funny and always made me feel like I was so important.
He gave me back the use of my hands.
May his family be blessed with all things good. May you remember the things that make you smile.

We just heard the sad news of Steven's passing; our heartfelt condolences to his entire family (we had not heard of his illness).

Steven had just joined Kaiser when he performed carpal tunnel releases on both of my wrists. The entire process, from the first time I met him, was a total pleasure; the care, optimism, and good humor he brought to the process was tremendous.

In preparing for my second carpal tunnel release, I learned that I had only been under local anesthesia for the first procedure, but could not remember the experience (the compound used is an amnesiac). I asked him whether he had spoken to me during the surgery (he had), and was curious as to whether I was funny (highly important during surgery). His reply: "Better than most." For the second surgery, I struggled to try to remember the process under anesthesia, to little avail other than recalling the good mood that he bought to the rest of the team as they began. I believe that my wife (who was taken by Steven's boundless charm) wished I had more wrists to work on.

In addition to nurturing of family, I cannot imagine a better legacy to leave than that of tangibly improving people's lives. The faint scars in my lower palms will always remind me of how Steven gave me back a significant part of my life, and that my life was made better because of him. Zichrono levracha.

Sad to hear the news today. I was a fellow student of Steve and Shauna at Centerville, Washington, then UC Davis. I will hold the memory of Steve's charm and humor in my heart. I extend my deepest condolences to Shauna and her family.
