William Ortman Obituary

William R. "Bill" Ortman Resident of Berkeley, CA Bill Ortman passed away peacefully Sunday morning, October 7, 2012, in his home in Berkeley, CA. He was preceded in death by his spouse, Suzanne, in 2006. He is survived by his sister, Aileen Askham, his four children and their spouses, Chuck and Anne Ortman, Vickie Smith, Richard and Hope Ortman and Kristin and Bob Donovan; his nine devoted grandchildren, Scott Ortman, Amie Blanco, Liane Lee, Alex Smith, Corinne Smith, Will Ortman, Sara Jensen, Katie Donovan and Rob Donovan, and six great grandsons, Ian, Ben, Warren, Miles, Cyrus and Escher. Bill was born and raised in Berkeley, CA by his parents, Charles J. Ortman and Jessie Rohde Ortman. Bill's father was a Lieutenant with the Berkeley Fire Department, and was killed in 1939 while saving 3 children from a burning house. While Bill was attending UC Davis in 1942, he met the love of his life, Suzanne Stephens, and they were married in 1944. After the War, where Bill served in the US Army Air Corps, he returned to Berkeley and opened Ortman's Ice Cream Parlor on Solano Ave. In 1950, the store moved to the corner of Solano and Colusa, where Ortman's operated for 43 years. An old quart milk bottle from his grandfather's creamery in Berkeley, established in the 1880's, sat on a ledge above the front door of the store. In the 1950's Bill became interested in antique automobiles and joined the Horseless Carriage Club, and he remained a member the rest of his life, he and his wife developing many lasting friendships. He owned several antique cars, but his favorite was a 1910 Buick touring car. Bill and his wife loved to take the Buick touring with other members of the East Bay chapter of the HCC. Bill also shared other interests with his wife, such as the Hill Hoppers dance club and several bridge groups, where they made lifelong friends. When Ortman's Ice Cream Parlor closed in 1993, many Berkeley residents were saddened to lose their favorite treat. As Bill was once quoted, "It's a fun business. Everyone comes looking for something good, and we try our very best to give them something good." And he always did. A Private memorial service will be held in his honor.

What a nice man he was! Our weekly treat with was lunch at Ortman's after our daughter's preschool morning. He was always so nice, and told us about the best strawberries for ice cream (the small ones, even though the big ones look showy), and stories of his childhood (putting out a fire with milk and how bad it smelled!). What a special place this was, what a good guy he was! And today, we're reflecting that it seems likely our new Vice President Harris must have known the joys of Ortman's ice cream!

I had the honor to work for Bill one summer. It was a magical summer. I learned a lot from Bill. I will tell you this. He put his heart and soul into ice cream. His ingredients were only the freshest and best ingredients in the world. He never had a shortcut for anything. Thank you Bill and RIP

Mr. Ortman's Ice Cream Store was part of my (almost) daily ritual from the early 1950's to the last days of his store...phenomenal ice cream & 'slushes' flavors & superior quality. He was an Institution on Solano Ave. (So was my Mom!) They are, both, missed by the "old-time" locals.

What great fun he created for so many of us "regulars."

My grandparents knew Bill Ortman as a friend and a fellow Dane. We always went to Ortman's throughout the 1960s and 70s, with its wire backed chairs, bubble gum ice cream, and wonderful feeling. He was good enough to hire my Cousin from Denmark when she came to the US and studied for a year at Cal.

Solano Ave. was never the same after Ortman's left. Berkeley lost a piece of its nice history with the death of Bill Ortman.

On behalf of three generations of my family, thank you Bill. You are missed.

Ortman's was an important part of my childhood in Berkeley. I remember 5 cent slushes and 15 cent ice cream cones, not to mention delicious sundaes. I also remember Mr. Ortman, who seemed to really enjoy his young customers. Rest in peace, Mr. Ortman, and thank you for the delicious memories!

I will forever remember Ortman's root beer slushes. I would save my nickel by not getting milk at lunch and run to get a slush after school. One of my fondest memories. He stored one of his old cars in my mother's garage. He always drove in the Solano Ave. parades. Thank you and sending good thoughts.
