Randy Fowler Obituary

A service to celebrate the life of Randy Fowler is scheduled at 10:00 AM on Thursday, August 24, 2023, at Southcrest Baptist Church. Randy, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, educator, and friend, passed away on August 20, 2023, at the age of 72. Please visit www.memorialdesigners.net for a service broadcasting schedule, floral purchasing, and an area to share stories of Mr. Fowler with his family.
Randall Kent Fowler was born on May 2, 1951, to Clifton Taylor and Zelma Oleva (Tidwell) Fowler in Eunice, NM. Randy loved his family and was grateful for the memories and friendships he had of growing up in the small town of Eunice. Randy not only excelled in academics but was an excellent athlete. He was drafted to play baseball for the Cincinnati Reds right out of high school, however, he opted for a college degree instead while playing Division 1 baseball and basketball at New Mexico State University. He transferred to Eastern New Mexico University where Randy met Donna Bock, whom he married on August 18, 1973. He completed his degree at ENMU while playing basketball and baseball. He went on to earn his Master's Degree in school administration and served in numerous capacities as a coach, assistant principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent of schools. He also worked at Region 18 Education Center in Texas as a field service agent for superintendents. He completed his career by returning to Portales, NM as superintendent of schools where he retired in 2013. His commitment to excellence and unwavering support for his students and staff earned him the respect and admiration of many who worked with him.
Upon retirement Randy and his wife, Donna, have lived in Lubbock where they became involved in Southcrest Baptist Church. Randy enjoyed the many friendships he made at Southcrest and his wonderful Sunday School class, Cornerstone. He enjoyed playing golf with friends from church and old friends he made throughout his coaching career.
Randy was dedicated to his family, and cherished his loving wife, Donna, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage on August 18th, 2023. He will be greatly missed by his daughters, Christie and Chelsie, who are grateful for his unconditional love, wisdom, and example of service to God by serving others. The greatest joys of his life were his grandchildren, Emersyn and Eli, of whom he was extremely proud. Of all his roles in life, he most cherished being their PawPaw. Randy will be remembered by his family and friends for his humility, kindness, and grateful heart.
Randy is survived by his wife, Donna Fowler; daughters, Christie Fowler and Chelsie (Kevin) Champagne, grandchildren, Emersyn and Eli Champagne; sister, Judy Ditmore; brother, Mike Fowler; nieces and nephews, Mark (Michelle) Tippit, Jarrod (Lori) Ditmore, M'Lee (Quentin) Merket, Jordan (Fernando) Baesso, Laurann Fowler, Brian Olberman; and many great nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Randy was preceded in death by his sister, Rebecca Tippit; and niece, Cherri Copeland.
In lieu of flowers, Randy's family suggest memorial contributions to either the Baptist Children's Home at www.nmbch.com or the Christian Children's Home at https://nmcch.org in remembrance of Randy. May his legacy inspire us all to pursue excellence, kindness, and love in all that we do.

Mr. Fowler,
I was fortunate to work at Mettie Jordan Elementary when Mr. Fowler was Superintendent of Eunice Public Schools. It is said that people come into your life to move you towards your pathway and Mr. Fowler was one of those people for me. He would stop by to bring a small token of appreciation or a copy of Master Teacher. Two of those Master Teacher stories have stayed with me throughout my career as an educator. One was about the Master who picked up an old worn out fiddle and played what looked like an instrument with no more music left in it. The other story was about our wants will always be present in life and we must learn to be at peace and content for the day. He always asked, "What do you need for your classroom?" Two things I asked for, he provided. One, an unlimited amount of time to teach reading to first graders. Two, a curriculum for teaching phonics. He also told me that he loved to hear me reading to students after lunch every day, and he told me listening to stories at an early age creates a love of reading and life long learning. How knowledgeable he was. I taught in a regular classroom for 25 years and eventually became an elementary principal for seven years. His example of being a listener, encourager, and godly man is hard to replace. His legacy continues with me and I´m sure other educators whose lives he impacted. Although I have retired, I work with struggling readers everyday using Phonics and I read to them often. They say my reading aloud is the favorite part of my instruction.
Thank you Mr. Fowler for being such a supporter of education and teachers.

Dearest, Donna, Christie, Chelsie,
There are people who touch our lives in such a profound way as to alter it forever. Randy was just such a man to me, who quietly led by example, and raised the bar for everyone around him. I will always remember him as kind, witty, exceptionally intelligent, and fiercely driven.
He was a natural leader, and just being in his presence made you feel you were part of something special. He made me strive to be a better version of myself, and I have carried that feeling with me in all the days since meeting him. I am certain others would say the same. have the highest respect, admiration, and love for Coach, and I will always be grateful for having had the pleasure of knowing him.
I hope you find great comfort in the memories you have and hold him always close to your heart.
With love and sadness in my heart,
Don Haase

Randy Fowler was a man I looked up to since he and Donna attended University Baptist where my dad was the pastor. My dad thought so much of him as a leader, and I remember wanting a marriage like the Fowlers had when I grew up. Randy was a great educator and an even better man. He leaves behind a legacy of excellence. My deepest sympathies for this wonderful family.
