Clarence Fisher Obituary

Clarence H. Fisher, 76, of Los Angeles, formerly of Elkhart, died on Sept. 28, 2022, at home in Los Angeles.

Our beloved Clarence Herbert Fisher came into this world to spread joy on May 21, 1946, in Benton Harbor, Michigan. He was born to the late Marvin Scott and Dorothy Mae (Turner) Fisher. Also preceding him in death are his younger brother, Luther Fisher; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Fisher; and his long-time friend, Lynette Spells.

His family relocated to Elkhart, Indiana, in 1956. The family joined St. James A.M.E. Church in Elkhart and this is where Clarence began his quiet walk with Jesus Christ. Prior to graduating from Elkhart High School in 1964, Clarence was active in sports where he earned varsity letters on the cross-country team as well as the varsity wrestling team, winning numerous awards and matches. He was also active in scouting, earning the rank of Eagle Scout.

When Clarence was drafted into the United States Army in 1966, during the Vietnam War, he determined that it was best for him to enlist in the United States Air Force, where he served for over four years until being honorable discharged as a Sergeant/Senior Airman. His last duty station was McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, Washingon. After finishing his last tour of duty, Clarence's entrepreneurial spirit and the desire to live in a warm climate caused him to relocate to sunny Los Angeles, California. It is here where he opened Fisher Maintenance, a place that he owned and operated for many years. He worked several other jobs, while attending Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, before finally landing a position with the City of Los Angeles, in the Communications Department as an electrician. It was from this position that he retired. He was, however, most proud of Fisher Maintenance, a job that allowed him to serve his friends and family. Based on his military training, being an electrician and the principal of Fisher Maintenance was a perfect fit for him. Clarence later married Gladys Mae Johnson in Las Vegas, Nevada, and this union lasted for over 30 years.

Left to cherish his memory are his brother, Arthur G. Fisher of Elkhart, Indiana, and sisters Ruth Fisher Creary, PhD. (Ludlow Creary, M.D., M.P.H.) of Los Angeles, Irene W. Patterson, M.S. Ed, M.S.A. of Mishawaka, Indiana, Gwendolyn Fisher McCorvey (Michael McCorvey Sr.) of Bellflower, California, sister-in-law, Robin Penny Fisher, M.B.A. of Brea, California, and his godmother, Miss Rose Jones of Los Angeles. He also leaves behind his long-time friend, Abraham (George) Fraser, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Clarence's viewing will be held on Monday, Oct. 31, at the Angelus Funeral Home in Los Angeles from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Services with military honors will be held on Nov. 1 beginning at 11 a.m. at Miramar National Veterans Cemetery in San Diego, California. Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is assisting the family with local arrangements.
