David L. White, 93, of Harbert, Michigan, passed away on Aug. 20, 2023, in Oak Park, Illinois.
Born and raised in Oak Park, Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Helen White; his brother and sister, Lyman White and Priscilla Braun; his dear friend Marilyn Wagner; and his beloved wife Janet Morgan White.
Dave and Janet met while attending Oak Park and River Forest High School. The two attended Indiana University together, where Dave studied economics and was a pole vaulter on the track team. Married during their senior year of college, the two moved to California where Dave served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
After a career in finance and banking in Chicago and Elkhart, Indiana, Dave and Janet retired to the Birchwood community in Harbert, Michigan. He loved sailing, traveling, sunsets on the beach, playing cards, Cubs wins, and reading stories – especially Hop on Pop and Pierre – to his grandkids and great grandkids. A perfect evening for him was a "Michigan dinner" of hamburgers, tomatoes and corn on the cob with family crowded around the table, followed by a rousing game of "Oh Hell" which he often won and always claimed he didn't cheat.
Dave, lovingly known as Ginpop to his family, is survived by his three children and their spouses, Dave and Patrice, Tom and Lynn, and Mary and Ken. He also leaves eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, who were the joy of his life.
Ginpop will be remembered for his tender heart. Forever a caregiver, he always took time to visit with friends and family, offering whatever help they needed, a glass of wine, and advice – which he apologized for afterwards but couldn't ever resist offering.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Harbor Country Emergency Food Pantry and Thrift Store, where Dave was a dedicated volunteer: Harbor Country Emergency Food Pantry and Thrift Store, Attn: Dave White Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 113, Three Oaks, MI 49128. Checks should be made payable to Harbor Country Food Pantry.
A private celebration of Dave's life with family and friends is planned.

I will always remember Mr. White as a dapper and truly kind man...like many "dads" I came to revere on our beloved Birchwood.
