Doris Marie Knox, formerly of Edwardsburg, Michigan, passed away Feb. 28, 2022, at HarborChase of Naperville, Illinois. She was 92.
Born April 6, 1929, in Elkhart, Indiana, she was the daughter of Albert and Eva (Hickman) Wilson.
Doris received her degree in registered nursing from Roseland School of Nursing in Chicago where the credo fit Doris perfectly: "Nurses must be quick-witted and courageous in a split second." She worked in numerous facilities in and around the Chicago and South Bend areas, including South Bend Osteopathic. Her preference was surgical nursing but she applied her managerial and nursing skills in the opening of her husband's medical practice in Edwardsburg in 1959.
Doris married Robert M. Knox on Jan. 3, 1953, in South Bend. She is survived by her husband; daughters, Debby Knox, Lisa Knox-Nervig and husband Denis of Naperville, Illinois, and son, Robert Knox and wife Cathy of Stevensville, Maryland. She has seven grandchildren, Alexandra, Kristopher, Sophia, Madison, Lucas, Michael and Anna, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law Richard Tirman, her parents and all of her siblings, Eloise Alt, Lois Miller, Elsworth Wilson, Melvin Wilson, Jack Wilson and Victor Wilson.
Her favorite spot in her home on Eagle Lake was her piano in the living room. It wasn't unusual for Doris, who never received formal music lessons, to entertain family and friends with her New Orleans style of music. Even in her last few years at HarborChase, she entertained residents and always received a round of applause after playing.
Doris was also an avid gardener and kept what she called her "Victory Garden," in the back yard. A favorite pastime was taking her children and grandchildren out on the pontoon for a swim on the east end of Eagle Lake.
In the 1970s, Doris was also an enthusiastic member of the Delta Theta Chi Sorority.
Family and friends are invited to gather from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at Hope United Methodist Church located at 69941 Elkhart Road, Edwardsburg. A Time to Remember Doris' life will be held at 11 a.m. March 7 at the church, where visitation will be one hour before the service. Officiating will be Pastor Nate Starkey. Interment will follow at Adamsville Cemetery.
