J.R. (Joyce) Rohrer, 87, of Elkhart, died at 2:25 a.m. Monday, May 30, 2023, at Hubbard Hill Estates. He was born Dec. 13, 1935, in Elkhart, to Joseph J. and Lucile (Hess) Rohrer. On June 16, 1957, he married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn E. (Weldy) Rohrer.
Surviving are his wife, Marilyn, Elkhart; children, Melody (Dr. Rae) Ringenberg, Apopka, Florida, Roland Rohrer, Goshen, and Wanda (Brian) Lewis, Jonesboro; seven grandchildren, Nathan (Carolyn) Ringenberg, Joel Ringenberg, Joseph (Taylor) Rohrer, Daniel Rohrer, Benjamin (Ashton) Rohrer, Austin (Laura) Lewis and Breanne (Derrick) Atkinson; and four great-grandchildren, Lucy Ringenberg, Titus and Felix Rohrer, and Grant Atkinson.
Preceding him in death are his parents and sisters, Joan McBrier, Helen Frantz and Patricia Hooley.
J.R. was a 1953 graduate of Wakarusa High School. He was a farmer prior to establishing the Rohrer-Weldy Insurance Agency in Wakarusa in 1963 and served as president for 35 years. He retired from Synergy Insurance Agency. J.R. was a faithful member of the Wakarusa Missionary Church, serving as Sunday school teacher, secretary and treasurer of the board. He also was treasurer of the Missionary Church, North Central District, and the Hubbard Hill Estates Inc. board where he was one of the founders. J.R. was a member of the Wakarusa Lion's Club and his hobbies were golf and traveling. Marilyn and J.R. enjoyed spending their winters in Sebring, Florida, for over 20 years and summers in Winona Lake.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 5 and 7 p.m. Thursday, June 8,, and one hour prior to the 11 a.m. funeral service on Friday, June 9, all at the Wakarusa Missionary Church, 202 W. Waterford St., Wakarusa. Pastor Chris Knight will officiate. Burial will follow at Yellow Creek Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be directed to Hubbard Hill Estates.
