Virginia L. Peters, 95, passed peacefully with her family in Elkhart, Indiana, on Aug. 12, 2025.
Born in Indianapolis to Paul and Mary Frances Towsley on Jan. 1, 1930, Virginia lived an active childhood playing outdoors with her three siblings, Tom, John and Nancy. Throughout her life she had a close relationship with her sister. As young women they excelled in horsemanship and often went out riding together, sometimes even after dark. Virginia's three siblings preceded her in death.
While attending college, Virginia met her husband, Army veteran Bill Peters. They married on Aug. 20, 1949. Virginia and Bill had three daughters: Saga, Barbara and Beverly. The young family moved from Indianapolis to Syracuse, Indiana. Virginia worked as a bookkeeper at the Maxwelton Golf Club and became a passionate golfer for several years. She also worked as an addiction therapist at Oaklawn for three years.
Bill preceded her in death in 1985.
Virginia had an elegant and glamorous sense of style. She always liked to look her best no matter what the occasion. Virginia laughed often and enjoyed reminiscing with family and friends. She was open to discovering the world and found amazement all around her.
Later in life, Virginia and her sister Nancy renewed their relationship and soon became inseparable. They both inherited a love of travel from their mother. As young teens the sisters and their mother drove across the country in an airstream trailer to California, stopping at national parks and rodeos along the way. In their 80s, Virginia and Nancy traveled together to Great Britain, Alaska and Florida. The sisters also shared a love for dogs. Their beloved black lab, Cleo, and miniature Australian shepherd, Billy Bob, accompanied them on some adventures.
While at home, the ladies enjoyed exercising their brains by completing jigsaw puzzles, reading and listening to audio books. After moving to Greencroft Retirement Community in Goshen, Virginia enjoyed attending church services and playing bingo. She loved spending time with her cat, Kitty.
She is survived by her three daughters: Saga (Greg) Brown, Barbara (Ed) Yoder and Beverly Peters; five grandchildren: Ryan Ziven-LeCount, Molly LeCount, Kyle and Kellyn Yoder, and Gabriel Peters; and four great-grandchildren.
